Burke:Irene May of Brights Grove

Irene May Burke was born in London, England on May 7, 1917, and passed away April 3, 2012, at Bluewater Health in Sarnia.  She came to Canada on February 10, 1948, with her husband Nevil and two young sons Graham and Robin.  During the War, she served in England with the A.R.P. as a “Dispatch Rider” and “Emergency First Aider.”  Irene was a member of St. John-in-the-Wilderness Anglican Church for 55 years, and St. Paul’s Anglican Church for 8 years.  She was associated with the Girl Guides from an 8 year old Brownie, to the Girl Guide Lambton Trefoil Guild, holding many positions, receiving the Medal of Merit.  Irene was an Honorary Member of: St. John-in-the-Wilderness Anglican Church, The Chippewa Band (Sarnia) and The Girl Scouts of America.  In past years, she served with the Home and School Association, The Scout Mothers Auxiliary and the Lambton Mission Team. Dear mother of three sons: Graham (Cheryl), Robin, and Christopher (Judy) and daughter Patricia (Steven).  She will be missed sadly by four grandsons, four granddaughters, five great-grandsons, eight great-granddaughters and one great-great-granddaughter. Predeceased by her beloved husband Nevil (1991), her parents William and Lilian Dawes, sister Ruby Hanson (husband Alfred and son John), and relatives in England and Australia. If you so wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John-in-the-Wilderness Church or the charity of your choice, which would be greatly appreciated by the family. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 9, 2012, at St. John-in-the-Wilderness Church, 2896 Lakeshore Rd., Bright’s Grove.  A private interment will be held at Lakeview Cemetery.
