BETTAM, Reginald (1931-2014) – Passed away peacefully on January 15 at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie surrounded by his family, after a lengthy battle with leukemia. He was the devoted beloved husband of Rita for 54 years, and father of Michael (Wendy Grennier), Colin, Catherine and Sean (Naomi Kawahara). Reg was proud grandfather of Matthew, Meagan, Cole, Cameron, Jessica, Alison, Ella & Henry. He was predeceased by his brother Leslie and is survived by his sister-in-law Peggy of Worcester, England.
A native of Worcester, Reg moved to Canada in 1956, bringing with him a love of tea and Cadbury chocolate, and a strong work ethic. His most enduring traits were his infectious smile and his penchant for treating anyone he encountered equally and with unreserved respect. He earned the admiration of many throughout a career in management roles in a variety of manufacturing industries, and he gave generously of himself to his community through organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, the Barrie British Club and the Irish Claddagh Club, as well as by coaching youth soccer and teaching newcomers to Canada to read English.
The RVH was Reg’s home-away-from-home for the past 16 years as a member of the RVH Auxiliary. His cheerful dedication to serving every patient, physician, staff member, visitor and fellow volunteer that he met, earned him a Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario’s Provincial Life Membership Award just two months ago, in recognition of his longstanding and reliable service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Reg’s name would be gratefully accepted by the RVH Auxiliary.?
