Ali M. Shakir passed away peacefully at his late residence, Terrace Lodge in Aylmer, on Tuesday, April 26 in his 93rd year.  Ali (Moe) was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend Pat (2015).   Predeceased by sisters Sheila Newson and Viola Berry, and brother Jim Shakir.  Cherished father and mentor to Kim (Brian) of Goderich, and son Scott (Sharon) of St. Thomas.  Adored Pops of Lindsay (Dave) O’Donoghue of Elmira, Ashley (Jordan) Miller of Ancaster, and Kyle Ferris of Kincardine.  Special Great-Pops of Callie, Tessa, and Avery.  Ali is survived by sister Eleanor Harder-Key of London, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ali was born in London, Ontario, October 27, 1923, the eldest child of the late Violet and Musa Shakir.  He served as a flying officer (navigator) in the R.C.A.F. from 1943-45 and was a Meteorologist with the Department of Transport (1954-50), and retired as Assistant Department Head of Science at Arthur Voaden Secondary School in 1986 after 27 years of teaching.

Ali was a charter member of the Lord Elgin Kiwanis Club as well as the Golden K Kiwanis Club, where he served on the Board of Directors for several years.  He was the recipient of the Mel Osborne Award that was established by the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada to recognize Kiwanians for their outstanding service to their club and community.  In their early years, the Golden K formed a unique group of volunteers under the guidance of Ali- the “Special K Force”.  For several years the dedicated group contributed hundreds of hours to assist seniors in St. Thomas and vicinity.  Ali, under the caring guidance of Pat, volunteered for numerous years at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, and he joined Pat as a volunteer usher at the Port Stanley Festival Theatre.

Ali’s family is extremely grateful for the compassionate and loving care he received at Metcalfe Gardens in St. Thomas, and most recently, at Terrace Lodge in Aylmer.

The family will receive friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, St. Thomas on Friday, April 29 from 7-9 pm. A memorial service to celebrate Ali’s life will be held at Williams Funeral Home on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow, with private interment of ashes in Elmdale Cemetery.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. Remembrances to the Recreational Department at Terrace Lodge or the ‘Expand the Experience’ Capital Campaign of the Port Stanley Festival Theatre would be appreciated.  On-line condolences may be sent to ahughson@execulink.com.

Bruce-Phyllis Marie of St. Thomas, on Monday, April 25th, 2016, at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, after a courageous battle, at the age of 65. Dearly loved wife of Kim Bruce and loved mother of Tammy Harris and Susanne Freeman (Rick). Cherished grandmother of Mikayla, Thomas, Abby and Erica. Dear sister of Janice Urban (Mike), Nelson Walters (Barb) , Dennis Walters (Annie) and Chris Bogart (Larry). Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Phyllis was born in St. Thomas on June 21, 1950, the daughter of the late Bruce and Lila (Tolmie) Walters.

A private family service . No visitation. Cremation, with interment with her parents in Elmdale Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Lung Association or the Kidney Foundation. GREENWOOD – Lilian (Bebbington) of Extendicare Home, London and formerly of St. Thomas

Greenwood – Lilian (Bebbington) of Extendicare Home, London and formerly of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully at her late residence on Monday, April 25th, 2016, at the age of 95. Beloved wife of the late Brigadier Victor Greenwood and dearly loved mother of Major Brian and his wife Jill Greenwood of Ottawa and the late Kenneth Victor Greenwood. Cherished grandmother of Ashley, Erin and Amy. Dear sister-in-law of Olive Bebbington and Jack (Carolyn) Greenwood. Lovingly remembered by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Lilian was born in St. Thomas on January 31, 1921, the daughter of the late John and Emma Bebbington. Lilian and her husband Vic were very active volunteers in the St. Thomas community.  In 1980, she and her husband became the founding co-ordinators of the St. Thomas Christmas Care program. She was also actively involved in the St. Thomas Kiwanis Club.

Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, St. Thomas where visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00pm at the Salvation Army, 380 Elm Street, St. Thomas. Interment to follow in Elmdale Cemetery. Beloved wife of the late C. John MacGillivary and dearly loved mother of Mary Margaret MacGillivary of St. Thomas, Lindsay MacGillivary of St. Thomas, Scott MacGillivary of St. Thomas, John (Kim) MacGillivary of Edmonton, Dan (Deb) MacGillivary of St. Thomas and Charlene MacGillivary of London. Cherished grandma of Mandy (Curt) Beer, Chris MacGillivary, Marissa MacGillivary, Derek MacGillivary, Brett MacGillivary, Corey MacGillivary, Ryan (Olga) MacGillivary and Shawn MacGillivary and great-grandma to Alexander and Amelia. Dear sister of Tom (Myrna) Doyle. Lovingly remembered by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by her father, Leonard Doyle; mother, Mary Doyle; sister, Theresa LeFrank; brothers, Richard Doyle, Jim Doyle, Jerry Doyle and Bob Doyle. Mary was born in Galt, ON on April 4th, 1937, daughter of Leonard and Mary Doyle. She married C. John MacGillivary in 1957. They moved to St. Thomas where they raised their six children. She had no other pursuits but to be a good mother and loving wife and she gave herself over to this pursuit with everything she had.

A Memorial Mass will be recited at St. Anne’s Church on Friday morning at 10:00am. Cremation has taken place. A reception will be held following the service at the St. Anne’s Community Centre.Visitation will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Community Living Elgin. Haddow (1) (217x275)Haddow – It is with great sadness that the family of the late Dennis Douglas Haddow announce his passing peacefully at his late residence Caressant Care on Bonnie Place, Friday, April 22, 2016, in his 93rd year. He was the last of his family. Dearly loved father of Richard (Helen) Haddow and Lynn Kennedy. Cherished grandpa of Sharon (Mark) Gliszczynski, Michael (Erin), Matthew (Laura), Laura (Darryl) and Great grandpa of Logan, Hannah, Emily, Samantha, Catherine, Mackenzie and Lauren. Dennis was predeceased by his wife Joyce (1979), son-in-law Roy (1999) and granddaughter Jennifer (2005). Dear brother-in-law of Winifred Heeds in England and uncle of John and Raymond in England.  Dennis was born in Lnodon, England on April 2, 1924. Dennis will fondly be remembered by his friends at Eaton Yale and Timken’s. He was a member of the Pinafore Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Dennis will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and sense of humour as the owner of Chicken Delight on Talbot St., St. Thomas and by his friends at Eaton Yale and Timken.

Visitation on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas. Maynard – Mary Florence of RR#3 St. Thomas passed away peacefully at the L.H.S.C – University Hospital on Wednesday, April 20th, 2016, in her 97th year. Beloved wife of James Maynard. Lovingly remembered by several nieces and nephews. Mary was the last of her family, predeceased by her siblings.  She was born in Kenaston, Saskatchewan on July 4th, 1919. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 9946 Talbotville Gore Road, Talbotville on Monday, April 25th, 2016 at 7:00pm.  Memorial donations may be made to Kingdom Hall. HODGES – Thomas of St. Thomas

Hodges-Thomas of St. Thomas passed away on Tuesday, April 19th, 2016, at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, at the age of 74. Survived by his best friend and companion of 18 years of Cheryl Carter. Loved father of Jeff, Devon and Dustin. Also survived by 2 sisters Betty Cesnik (late Frank) and Joan Miloloza (Steve) and a brother Donald. Predeceased by a brother Robert and an infant brother John. Predeceased also by his parents William and May (Mitchell) Hodges and a daughter Kimberly Gail (Hodges) Field (1980). Tom was raised in St. Thomas and attended Central Elgin Collegiate and 1960 joined the R.C.N. and in 1963 worked at Clevite Ltd. until 1966 and the joined the St. Thomas Police Force. In 1994 he retired from the Police Force and went to work for Ryder Logistics Trucking until he retired at the age of 65. Tom it seemed was always in a uniform of some sort, from Military Cadets in High School Sea Cadets, the R.C.N., the Police Force and finally Ryder Logistics uniform.

Dearly loved husband of M. Loved gramps of 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and he is remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.  Dear brother-in –law of Bill (Sheri) Cummings of Ilderton and Ruth Cummings of St. Thomas. Cherished grandma “Mimi” of Sara, Cory, David, Keegan, Carter, Jake and Owen. Predeceased by her brother John Stocker (Joan). Midge was born in St. Thomas on December 30th, 1940, daughter of the late Edward and Alice (Wood) Stocker. Over the years she worked at Bell Telephone, St. Thomas Transmission  and Bearing,  Mugford Shoes and Van-Cross Farm Equipment. She was a founding member of the Quota Club.

Mansell-Roy Norman of Elgin Manor passed away peacefully, on Saturday, April 16th, 2016, at his residence, in his 90th year. Dear step-father of Jeff Moyes, Tim Moyes, Monica Spicer and Mary Walker (Dan) and  father of Steve Mansell. Dear brother of Grace Upfold of Montreal. Predeceased by 4 brothers Stanley, Henry, Bob and Dennis Mansell and 2 sisters Edna and Lillian. Dear friend of Shirley Moyse.  Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Roy was born in St. Thomas on May 3rd, 1926, the son of the late Harry and Ada (Stevenson) Mansell. He was retired from Parkwood Hospital, London. He served in the army for 3 years from 1943-1946. He was a member and Past Master of St. David’s Masonic Lodge #302 A.F. and A.M.  Roy was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church.

Beech-Ronald Leonard of Port Stanley, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, April 15, 2016, at his residence, at the age of 95. Beloved husband of Eileen ‘Joyce” (Maycock) Beech and dearly loved father of Barbara Beech-Nugent of Howell, Michigan and Rhonda Duffy (John) of St. Thomas. Cherished grandfather of Jonathan (Laura) and Lindsay Silver and great grandfather of Benjamin and Elaina Silver. Dear brother of Robert Fraser (June) of St. Clair Shores, Michigan and Shirley Ward (Bernard) of Clinton Township, Michigan. Predeceased by 2 brothers Albert and William Beech, brother-in-law Gordon Maycock and sister-in-law Louise (Smith) Maycock. Ron was born in Barrie, Ontario  on April 16, 1920, the son of the late Albert Beech  and Annie Mae (Thompson) Fraser. Ron was a graduate of Michigan State University in 1950.  Ron worked from 1936-1942 for Krogers, served in the Canadian Army 1942-1946.  He was the produce and Dairy Merchandiser, Toledo Division 1950-1963, Michigan Potato Council, Executive Director 1967, G.M. of Sun Parlour Greenhouse Growers Coop, 1967-1970.  MSU Cooperative Extension Agent and Director 1970-1985. He was a Corporal in the Essex Scottish 5th Regiment and a member of the Canadian and American Legion. He was a member of the Masons, Rotarians, Kiwanians, Y’S men International and Y.M.C.A. (Detroit). Ron served as a Mdland County Commissioner, served on the School Board for Lincoln School District, and assisted with the Back Pack Program in Midland County. He was a member of the Canadian and American Veterans’ Association. He later was a member of the Port Stanley Village Association and was a volunteer for the Alzheimer Society and Elgin County Homes.

A  Memorial service to celebrate Ron’s life will be held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Port Stanley  on Wednesday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation at the Church on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. Cremation has taken place. Beloved wife of the late Thomas Murray Garrison and loved mother of Penny Arnold (Robert), Cheryl McIntyre (Hugh), Kelly Walker (Kip Burdon), Tom Garrison (Kelly) and John Garrison (Laurelee). Cherished grandmother of Jody, Greg, Darryl (Sandy), Kylie, Joshua, Kayla, Tanner, Jennifer and Jaclyn.  Dear sister of Don Allen (Amelia). Predeceased by 4 brothers Dave, Harry, Doug and Andy Allen. Sadly missed by a number of great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Ethel was born in St. Thomas on July 2, 1927, the daughter of the late Alexander and Nellie May (Thompson) Allen. She was a retired Supervisor at Brass Craft. She was a member of Branch 41 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Family was always the number one priority in Ethel’s life.

A private family service will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Tuesday morning. Interment to follow in South Park Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. FOWLER – David Gary of St. Thomas, passed away suddenly after an operation on Wednesday, April 13th, 2016, at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, at the age of 67. Dearly loved husband of Michele “Mitch” (Doan) Fowler and loved father of Chad Fowler (Lori) and their children Brooke and Luke and Ben Fowler (Natalie) and their children Carson and Aby. Dear brother-in-law of Bev Parker (John). Special cousin to Linda Spence (Warren) and life long friend Robert “Bob” Chantler.  Dave was born in St. Thomas on April 26th, 1948, the son of the late Joseph and Shirley (Lightfoot) Fowler. He owned and operated J.H. Fowler Ltd. Dave was a longtime member of the Port Stanley Sailing Squadron and a Past Commodore.

The family will receive friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on  Tuesday, April 19th from 7-9 p.m.   In following David’s wishes cremation has taken place and a private service will be held at a later date . IMG_4728 (207x275)Thibert-Charles A. of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, April 13th, 2016, at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital at the age of 66. Beloved son of the late Charles and Alexandria Marie (Brodeur) Thibert.  Dear brother of Bill and Frank Thibert (Patricia). Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Charles was born in St. Thomas on February 1, 1950. He had worked at Friendco Enterprises and maintenance at the Royal Bank, East End, St. Thomas. He enjoyed trailering at Dalewood and developed many friendships there.

Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas where funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. Private interment in Rodney Cemetery. Visitation on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Remembrances may be made to Community Living Elgin.

Dearly loved wife of Carm Hindley and loved mother of Susan McIntyre (Murray), Vic Hindley (Priscilla), late Wendy Cook (Ernie), Cam (Deb), Marnie McKay (Rob) and Mark Hindley (Lindsay). Dear sister of David Major, Shirley Lunn and Russell Major. Predeceased by 4 brothers Ken, Gord, Don and Doug Major and 3 sisters Ruth, Barb and Eva. Sadly missed by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a grandson Bradley Hindley. Marg was born in Southwold Township on March 18th, 1933, the daughter of the late Clifford and Alice (Morgan) Major. She worked at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital. Marg was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church.

Resting at Williams Funeral Home,  45 Elgin St. Thomas where funeral service will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. Cremation to follow, with private entombment in Union Cemetery. Touseant – Gerald Lawrence “Poppi” of Caressant Care Bonnie Place, St. Thomas passed away peacefully at his late residence on Wednesday, April 13th, 2016, in his 74th year.  Beloved husband of the late Betty Louise (McKerlie) Touseant. Dearly loved father of Teresa Daigle and Dan Touseant. Cherished grandpa of Devin, Jacob and Ella. Dear brother of Dorothy Weatherstone, Dan Touseant and Ellen McDonagh. Uncle to his special niece Lynn McDonagh and many other nieces and nephews. Predeceased by three sisters. Gerald was born in Pembroke, Ontario on February 18th, 1943, son of the late Derek Walter and Margaret (Bonema) Touseant. He worked in parking services and security for over 25 years at the University of Western Ontario. Jerry was well known for his love of darts, making new friends and was well respected by all his family and peers. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Caressant Care Retirement and Nursing Home, Bonnie Place, St. Thomas for their excellent care.

D'Arcangelo (195x275)D’Arcangelo-Sante of Elgin Manor passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, on Sunday, April 10th, 2016, at his residence, at the age of 84. Dearly loved husband of 62 years, Claudina (DiRenzo) D’Arcangelo and loved father of Marisa Donovan of London and Doriana Duncan  of Port Stanley. Much loved grandfather of Tara, Brittany, Taylor and Cassidy. Predeceased by 2 brothers Guistino and Rocco. D’Arcangelo. Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Sante was born in Chieti, Italy on November 1, 1931, the son of the late Bartolomeo and Melanina D’Arcangelo. He came to Canada from Chieti, Italy in December, 1956. He was a member of St. Anne’s Church.  Sante was retired from Emerson where he was a dedicated employee for 35 years.

The family will receive friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Wednesday from  2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church on  Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Holy Angels’ Cemetery. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday at  1:45 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Kniss (183x275)Kniss-Carol (Norman) (Wilkinson) of Tillsonburg, passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital, Kitchener due to complications following heart surgery on April 10, 2016, at her 78th year. Loving mother of Steven Norman (Kim), Michael Norman (Deb), Sheila Van Herzele (Gary) and step mother of Gary Kniss (Trudy) and family. Cherished grandmother and step grandmother of the late Andrea (2013), Timothy, Alisha, Amber, Alex, Curtis, Carly, Tyler, Shannon, Stephanie and Craig and their families. Cherished great grandmother of seven great grandchildren and number eight due in July. Predeceased by her loving husband Wayne Norman (1975), Henry Kniss Sr. (1994) and dear companion of Joseph Verbruggen (2009) as well as her father Lorne Wilkinson (1973) and in laws Harvey and Dorothy Norman.  Survived by her mother Elsie Wilkinson and siblings Laurine Moerman 9Andy), William Wilkinson (Mary Beth), Brian Wilkinson (late Barb 2014), Sandra Fichter (Dietmar), Bruce Wilkinson (Wendy), the late Lori Gould 2012 (Ric), sister-in-law Karen Scott (Bob), Sandra Auckland (Dwight), and the late Ross and Helen Norman. Aunt Carol will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews and their families as well as nephew Todd Wilkinson (Richard) of California with whom she shared a special, lifelong bond.

In keeping with Carol’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Following a family burial at Elmdale Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Thomas. Dear brother of Rosemary Kevany (Pat), James Sheridan (Sandra), Maureen Sheridan, Terry Sheridan (Jean), Bernie Sheridan (Brenda), Theresa Eaton (late Lloyd), Rita Morgan (late Frank (Fra). Dear brother-in-law of Pat Sheridan, Cheryl Chase (Wally) and Bob Cliffe. Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Vince was born in London on July 5th, 1945, the son of the late James and Annie (Smyth) Sheridan. He was a retired owner of Sheridan and Associates Insurance. Vince was a member of St. Anne’s Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Past President of the Chamber of Commerce, and former member of the St. Thomas Golf and Country Club and Kettle Creek Golf Club.

It is with great sadness that we announce that William “Bill” McKay passed away on April 8th, 2016, at his home with his family by his side.  Born on January 22nd, 1934 in St. Thomas. Bill was the son of the late Scott and Alberta (Mayhew) McKay. He was the beloved husband of Jean and loving father of Heather (Ed) and David (Christa). Step-father to Chris (Joanne) and Daryle (Susan). Grandfather to William, Caitlyn, Sean, Bryce, Mikhayla and Jessica. Loving brother to Elizabeth (Ralph), Rachel (Charlie, deceased) and Ian (Helen). He will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Bill grew up and lived in St. Thomas most of his life. He graduated from the University of Guelph (BSA), the University of Toronto (BASc) in Mechanical Engineering and Osgoode (LLB). He practiced law in the City of St. Thomas, latterly with Gunn and Associates, until his retirement in 2000 and was the City Solicitor for over 30 years. He was on the Boards of Elgin County Cancer Society, Elgin County Motor League, the Housing Authority and the Liberal Association. He was also a member of the Golden K Club, the St. Thomas Golf Club and the St. Thomas Curling Club. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, curling and carpentry. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his family and friends.

If so desired and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice in his memory. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church in St. Thomas on Thursday, April 14th, 2016 at 1:00pm. Visitation will be held prior from 12:00-1:00pm. It will be follows by a social hour at the St. Thomas Golf Club. Beloved wife of the late Garnet “Ross” Irwin (Feb. 2005) and dearly loved mother of Deborah “Deb” Vosbourgh of St. Thomas and Ruth and her husband Bill Warren of St. Thomas. Predeceased by a daughter Louise Irwin. Loved grandmother of Debbie and Jason Homan, Bill Warren and Becky and Tyler Bradshaw and great grandmother of Ashton James Bradshaw, Linkin Glen-Ross Bradshaw and Piper Audrey Lee Bradshaw. Dear sister of Fred Gee of Hamilton and Doreen Gill of Burlington. Sadly missed by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Audrey was born in London, Ontario on August 21, 1928, the daughter of the late Frederick and Eva (Diver) Gee. She worked at Thermodisc.

Beloved wife of the late James Vint (1999) and dearly loved mother of Sharon Austin, Jon-Paul  Vint and the late Karon Vint (1991).Loved grandmother of Brodie Feir, Tanner Austin and Kalysha Clarke. Dear sister  of Charles Fugard, Marjorie Martin and Harold Fugard. Predeceased by 2 brothers Eugene and Larry Fugard. Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Rene was born in St. Thomas on December 22, 1938, the daughter of the late Francis and Eva (Wright) Fugard.
