YOUNG, Patricia Bernadette (Geary) – Ottawa, Ontario

Posted by on February 25, 2019

After a courageous battle with cancer Patricia Bernadette (Geary) Young passed away in Ottawa on Saturday 16 February, 2019 at the age of 59.  Since her diagnosis, she maintained her optimistic outlook and was determined to remain at home, though her last few days were spent in hospital surrounded by her family.  Born in Toronto to the late Jack and Geraldine Geary, Bernadette was beloved wife of 39 years of Bill Young; mother to daughters, Christina (Matt Dale), Laurie (Dan Preece) and Colleen (Matt O’Neil); Nana to granddaughters, Dayna and Avery; dear sister to Jim (Pat) and Mary Lou, and the late Ellen, D’Arcy (Sandy), and Barbara, her twin.  Bernie was also a cherished sister-in-law, cousin and aunt, enjoying any chance to be with her large extended family.

Bernadette enrolled in nursing after high school but set that dream aside to prepare for the impending arrival of her first born.  Two more daughters came along and completely filled her time until the youngest started school.  At this point, her need to care for others had to find an outlet.  After picking up additional high school credits, while still a full-time mom, she re-enrolled in the nursing program, graduated and started a second career caring for the elderly at two local facilities.  Her interest and involvement in health care remained keen to the end, as she often conferred with and offered advice to the home-care and hospital nurses on the subject of her own care.  She showed great interest in how things had changed since she left the profession a few years ago.

After family, friends and career, Bernadette had two other loves: music and growing things.  Her collection of LPs, cassettes and CDs was without equal.  And the flora, both inside and outside her house, was prodigious.

Bernadette’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the home-care nurses of Saint Elizabeth’s Health Care, and the staff at both the Ottawa General Hospital and Winchester District Memorial Hospital, for their dedication and kindness.

Bernadette was the force that pulled us together, and true to form, she continues to be that force.  A celebration of Bernadette’s life will take place at the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club at 6627 Marina Drive, Manotick, Ontario on Saturday 9 March 2019.  In accordance with her wishes there will be food, drink and her favourite music.  It was also her wish that neither the event nor the attire be sombre.  Family and friends are welcome to drop by between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, with remembrances taking place at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation / Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, the Saint Elizabeth Foundation’s End of Life care program or the Winchester District Memorial Hospital would be most welcome.
