ABBOTT: Wayne of Glencoe

On Sunday, August 20th, 2017, at London Health Sciences Centre, Wayne Bruce Abbott of Glencoe, passed away. On March 16, 1948 in Chatham, Ontario, a very special boy was born to Philip (2012) and Kathleen (1986) Abbott.  To them this boy was a miracle and together they raised a kind, generous, big-hearted, loving gentleman.  He grew up in Newbury, Ontario with his brother, Michael and his sister, Bonnie (Walls).  To them he was a best friend, companion and partner in crime. On September 20, 1969 he married his childhood sweetheart, Lorraine “Lorrie” Mahovlich (2007).  To her this man was the love of her life for 38 years and together they raised three daughters, Kerri (Edward (2011)) Mesman, Terri (Glenn) Kendall and Lindsay  (Jason) Van Dalsen.  To them he was their protector, confidant, biggest fan and hero. Wayne’s legacy and most amazing gift to the world were his seven grandchildren; Randy, Jessica, Austin, Emma, Sydney, Lou and Sam. To him, they were his whole world and he supported and encouraged them in everything they set out to do.  To them, he was a super hero. Wayne was always active in his community and in his life.  He was a warden at Christ Church, Newbury; a Kinsmen; a volunteer fireman for the Newbury Fire Department and Treasurer of the Newbury Legion.  He was a member of The Village Singers Choir, coached and played baseball, threw darts and was still playing hockey.  You always knew when you took your vehicle into the shop; you could count on a great conversation and a laugh or two – especially around 5pm on a Friday. Wayne will be missed and remembered by his brothers and sisters-in-law; Michael Walls, Debra Abbott, Linda and Paul DeBruyne, Chris Mahovlich, Valerie Mahovlich, Trudy Mahovlich, Vicky and Allan Fletcher and by his many nieces and nephews.  Also by his stepmother, Edna Abbott; mother-in-law, Stella Mahovlich; son-in-law, Lou Montes and special friend, Jan Allan.

Visitation will be held at Van Heck Funeral Home, 172 Symes Street, Glencoe, Ontario on Wednesday, August 23rd from 7-9pm and Thursday, August 24th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.  Funeral Service on Friday, August 25th at 11am with reception to follow at the Newbury Legion.  Private family interment. Royal Canadian Legion, Newbury Branch will conduct a service at the funeral Home on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Memorial donations to St. John’s Anglican Church, Glencoe or The Canadian Cancer Society.

The family announces with great sadness, the passing of Frances Matilda Ryan on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Parkwood Hospital, London. Born July 6, 1935. Daughter of the late Joseph and Geraldine (O’Connor) Eckert, Seaforth ON. Fran was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, sister and friend. She was a wonderful homemaker, fabulous cook and was happiest while enjoying a meal surrounded with family and friends, that she had prepared. She was warm, with a kind and gentle heart and a million dollar smile. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories; her loving soul mate of forty years, John Leitch, her children, Gary (Florence), Stephen (Evelyn), Lawrence (Wendy), Geraldine Catherine, Vincent (Tracey) and Theresa-Lynn Robertson her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and sisters, Rosemary Rhodes and Anne (Peter) Mahu. She is predeceased by her youngest son Sean Patrick (1967), brothers Conrad, Stephen, William and sisters, Dorothy, Geraldine and Judy.

FLETCHER: John Patterson of Toronto

With family by his side, Jack passed away peacefully on June 29, 2017 at Sunnybrook Hospital in his 93rd year. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Brown) for 57 years. Loving father and grandfather of Kathryn (Ron Gough) of Appin and their children Rosalyn, Jonathan, Tracey; Eric (Val) and their children Matthew, Andrea, Melanie of Mississauga; Andrew (Michele) and their children Aidan, Avery of Mississauga. He is survived by his brother Hugh (Nona) of Appin and his sister Dorinne Howlett of Lambeth, sister-in-law Kathleen Stubbs of Balsam Lake and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sister Phyllis Gillies of Glencoe and his brothers-in-law Stanley Gillies, Mike Howlett and Fred Stubbs.

He was born in Ekfrid Township, the eldest child of Milton and Catherine (Patterson). He attended SS#6 Ekfrid, Glencoe High School and the University of Western Ontario. Jack taught elementary school in Melbourne, Petrolia and Wallaceburg before moving to the town of Leaside. During the summers he also taught Physical Education courses for the Ontario Department of Education. He retired from East York Board of Education as Vice Principal in 1979. Jack curled for many years at East York Curling Club. He was passionate about his plants and flowers. His summers were spent at the cottage on Balsam Lake. Competing at cards, bridge, lawn bowling, or softball were always welcome pursuits. Many thanks to Dr. Andy Smith, Dr. Sheldon Tobe, Dr. Doug Goodall, and all the staff at Sunnybrook Hospital for the excellent care Jack has received for many years. A visitation/reception will be held in Toronto at Jubilee United Church, 40 Underhill Dr. on July 18, 11 am – 2 pm. Visitation in Glencoe will be on Wednesday, July 19, 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm at Van Heck Funeral Home,172 Symes Street, Glencoe where the memorial service will be held on July 20 at 1 pm. Interment will be at Appin Cemetery, with reception to follow at the Appin Community Centre. Cremation has taken place. Suddenly on Thursday, March 16, 2017 James Edward “Jim” Hayter” of Alvinston passed away in his 71st year. Predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Mary Louise (Bindner) (March 2, 2017). Dear father of Chad and Julie Hayter and Pat and Melissa Hayter. Devoted grandfather of Sarah, Matt, Ryan, Joey, Sam, Tom, Michael and Lily. Dear brother-in-law of Francis Bindner, Mike (Connie) Bindner, Joe (Bernice) Bindner, Catherine Ann (Richard) Cadogan, and Patti (Alec) McLachlin. Jim will be fondly remembered by his nephews, nieces and many relatives and friends. He has been with the Alvinston Fire Department for 44 years having served as Fire Chief for 15 years. Jim was a charter member of the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association and was the Ontario representative. He is the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Brooke-Alvinston and has served on council for 3 terms, charter member of the Alvinston Districts Optimist Club, Canada 150 celebrations chairperson. Jim enjoyed fishing with friends and family and was an avid supporter and fan of Minor Hockey and Baseball. After a brief Illness, Karen E. Wolfe passed away at her home in Strathroy surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 in her 73rd year. Survived by her only daughter Kelly DeMars of Leamington, her sister Bonnie Seeley of Strathroy, her brother Tom (Barb) Ritchie of Newbury. Also remembered by her nephews Bill (Lisa) Seeley, Strathroy, T.J. (Lindsey) Ritchie, Cody Ritchie all of Newbury and great-nephew and niece Craig and Aleigha Seeley and brother-in-law Jim Thornicroft. Predeceased by her parents Thomas and Clara (Watson) Ritchie, sister Brenda Thornicroft, brother-in-law Bill Seeley, son-in-law Stacey DeMars and grandson Jamie DeMars.
