Mum was an excellent cook who loved having her family for dinners. She also loved gardening, reading, playing cards and other games. In her whole life she was an active, informed and vocal citizen. Mum was a well-respected and devoted member of Trinity New California United Church, working in the UCW and Sunday school for many years. A former member of Women’s Institute and Kingsville Friendly Club. SIMS, Everett Christian – Kingsville

Posted by on March 27, 2014

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, and friend. He passed away peacefully in his 101st year with his family by his side. He is survived by son-in-law Brad Stannard, daughter and son-in-law Karen and Doug Arnold, grandchildren Mark and Lisa Stannard, Kurtis and Chrissy Arnold, Lesley (Arnold) and Jacey Brockman, and great grandchildren Phillip and Owen Stannard and Quinn and Emerson Brockman. He is predeceased by his wife, Alta (Bailey) (2004), his daughter Joanne Stannard (2010), and his grandson Todd Stannard (1975). Also predeceased by Alta’s 14 siblings. He was born on June 2, 1913, only child of James and Celia Sims, on the 4th Concession of Gosfield South Township and moved to the 3rd Concession when he was 2 years old. Following his marriage to Alta, he continued to farm his father’s farm and live in the same home that he grew up in until he was 95. He then moved to Southgate Residence and Royal Oak LTCC. He lived his 100+ years in the Town of Kingsville! He was an active member of Epworth United Church all his life, singing in the choir, being the only treasurer of the Couples Club, and acting and playing musical instruments in the Minstrel Shows. Playing cards on Saturday nights and spending time with friends and family was also a big part of his life. If eating chocolate, ice cream, pies, and eggs everyday contributes to living 100 years – maybe he was onto something!  Resting at the C. Stuart Sykes Funeral Home, 91 Division St. S., Kingsville, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday March 28, 2014 p.m.  Funeral Service from Epworth United Church, Division St. S., Kingsville, Saturday at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday March 29, 2014.  Rev. John Van Omme officiating.  If desired, donations to  Epworth United Church would be appreciated.  Interment in Greenhill Cemetery, Kingsville.  Condolences may be left at www.sykesfuneralhome.ca

With characteristic determination, Doug Johnstone overcame many serious health challenges over the past few years, but sadly on Feb. 14 he suffered a massive stroke which he could not survive.  He regained consciousness long enough to exchange a brief goodbye with family and died on Feb. 22 at the HotelDieuHospital in Windsor at the age of 83 years.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Janet, children Brad (Carol Mannone), Andrea (John Shelley); step-daughter Andrea Shaughnessy (Tony Burrell); sister Rosemary Tait (John) brother Ivor (Janet); nephews Rick (Sue) and Frank (Michele); grandchildren Jesse (Carrie) and Elicia Vine (Jason); as well as four step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and four great-nieces and nephews.

Doug was born in Windsor on July 3, 1930, to May Weeks Johnstone and Lloyd Johnstone.  He was an adventurer who jumped into life with both feet and lived it to the fullest extent.  His long and varied career in marketing, sales promotion and general management allowed him to combine his creative talents with his penchant for travel.

In his early career with Beauty Counsellors in Windsor, he launched the campaign to crown Windsor as the City of Roses.  As a senior executive with Sarah Coventry Jewelry he lived in Rochester, New York; Sydney, Australia; and Fife, Scotland.  In Roanoke, Virginia, he acted as President of Stuart Maguire Inc., and later as CEO of Ceres Cosmetics.

He returned to Toronto and worked as CEO of a small-business incubator and then as a General Manager with York University’s Centre of Entrepreneurship, where his work included assignments in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia.  He was also a well-respected consultant to the furniture industry.

With each place he visited, Doug took great delight in meeting people, seeing sights and sampling local cuisine.

After retiring, Doug moved to Elora, where he made many friends and indulged his passion for gardening.  He loved to cook and entertain, and hosted many memorable parties with family and friends.

He was also a member of the St. Georges Masonic Lodge #41 in Kingsville, and a Shriner.

Doug returned to the Windsor area four months ago and settled in Kingsville, where his focus was researching and writing a family history.  He would consider himself very fortunate to have lived a full and happy life, and his main regret would be that he still had so many interesting things to do, places to see and people to meet.

Celebrations of Doug’s life will be held in the spring.  If desired, contributions may be made to the Scottish Rite Learning Centre, Windsor, and the Salvation Army.  Online condolences may be left at www.sykesfuneralhome.ca

Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
