HOOPER, McCORMICK “MAC” – The family of McCormick “Mac” Elroy Hooper, 95, of Pelee Island, sadly accept Mac’s passing on January 24, 2019. Mac will be missed by his brother Zane, daughter Hallie (Jim), grandchildren Amy (Ben), Ryan (Anna) and Sean and his great-grandchildren, Elana, Nate, Emily, and Evan, who brought him special pleasure. Mac lived his life on the Great Lakes. His childhood summers were spent on Old Hen Island where his parents were caretakers of the Quinnenbog Club. His first job was stoking coal on the Pelee Boat. Then he signed on to sail with Great Lakes freighters and over time earned his third, second and first mate’s papers and finally his Master of Inland Waters certificate. For many years he and his family ran a ferry service between Leamington and Pelee, first with their boat the Avon and later with the MV Leamington. Zane once commented that Mac could handle a boat better than anyone he knew. For a lifetime Mac enjoyed collecting stamps, discussing politics, and reading. His favourite book A Tale of Two Cities, ends with the quote “It is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” At Mac’s request, there will be no funeral service but cremation and internment in Pelee Island Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home, 69 Wellington St. North, Woodstock (519-537-3611). Donations in Mac’s memory may be made to the Pelee Island Heritage Centre.
