DIEHL, Donald – Surrounded by family and friends at Woodstock Hospital on Thursday, August 16, 2018, after a short battle with cancer, Donald Diehl of Woodstock in his 84th year. Predeceased by his parents, grandparents, sister Jean, son Robert (1980) and twin daughters Donna Mae and Kathy Anne. Survived by three sons Doug (Louise), Jim and Dave. Grandfather of Logan, Brittany, Darla, Jeremy, and Terri-Lyn; Great Grandfather of Anthony. Remembered by many nieces and nephews. Dempster, Theresa – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Theresa Dempster (nee Keeney) on July 21, 2018 in her 88th year. Theresa was born in Glasgow, Scotland and is predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Dempster. Predeceased by siblings Katherine McNee, May Owen, Eddie Keeney. Theresa will be sadly missed by her daughters, Catherine (Tony) of London, Carol of Tavistock and Lynda of Woodstock. Remembered by her grandchildren, Jim Miles, Dale Browncombe (Tara), Bill Meaney, Jennifer Meaney and Tyler Smith. Great grandmother to Madelyn Meaney of Edmonton. Theresa also has many nieces and nephews still in Canada and Scotland. Theresa has left behind the love and memories of some very special friends, Rosemary Kerr, Marie Labadie and lovingly Mia Ransford. Theresa passed away at Woodingford Lodge (Pinecrest), where she also worked for 25 yrs. Theresa enjoyed her days with many staff members that had become like a second family to her and her daughters. “Thank you” to the staff of Pinecrest and Woodingford Lodge does not seem to cover the extra care that they provided to Mum on her final days. A very special thank you to the PSW’s, RN’s, and RPN’s. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 2 – 4 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Br# 55, 642 Dundas St. Woodstock. BRANCH, Eleanor- Passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the Errinrung Longterm Care Facility, Thornbury, Eleanor Harriett Branch (nee Pallister) formerly of Woodstock at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Peter Branch who predeceased her in 1990. Loving mother of Pamella Branch (Martin Hederich) of Collingwood, Paul Branch (Catherine) of Milton and Greg Branch (Estelle-Clare) of Kitchener. Grandmother of Amanda & Jennifer; Brianna, Ethan, Brent, Eli, Eliza and Carolynne. Survived by her brother Norman Pallister of Woodstock. Predeceased by her parents John and Eleanor (nee Milmine) Pallister and brothers Wilfred Pallister and George Pallister. Eleanor will be fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, and extended family.

KERTESZ, John Sr.; Peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Woodstock. Beloved husband of Elizabeth Kertesz (nee Hegedus) for 62 years. Loving father of John (Agi), and Tom (Eleonora). Cherished grandfather of Tommy (Yaisely), Katie (Jimmy), Alana and David. Cherished great grandfather of Jaime-Lynn and Frankie. Survived by a sister in law, Annie Ondo. Predeceased by his father John (1944), mother Anna (1962), brother Miklos (1986) and brother in law Steve Ondo (2016). John was born in Hungary in 1931. He wed Elizabeth in May 1956 and they fled Hungary during the Revolution. In their new homeland, John and Elizabeth raised their 2 sons, John and Tom and farmed in Princeton, Bright, and Drumbo. Shirley I. Westlake, 79, of Lititz, PA., passed away Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. She was born in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada to the late Malcom and Loretta Pratt Isbister and graduated from Woodstock Collegiate Institute. Shirley always enjoyed traveling and mixing with the people. Everywhere she went she immediately made new friends. She could go into a room and just light it up. Her sense of humor and her infectious laugh always brightened the day. Even if she knew no one there, she would make friends with strangers and would immediately be deep in conversation, with everyone she met. She was always very well received. She will truly be missed by all her bus buddies. She loved the tours and especially the casino tours. Shirley was married to her husband Bill for 56 years and they were rarely separated as they worked together in all their ventures, as full partners and owners of Westlake Tours.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband Bill, siblings, granddaughters, nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 12:30-1:30pm, followed by a celebration of Shirley’s life at 1:30pm on Monday, July 30, 2018 at the Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home, 69 Wellington St. N. FEB. 18, 1925 – JUNE 5, 2018.  Peacefully released to her heavenly home from the prison of alzheimers in her 94th year.  Predeceased by husband, George (2017) and brothers Donald, David and James.

Betty is survived by her son, John (Judy) of Kitchener, three grandchildren, Jane Coe (Steve), Janet Bast (Mike), and Julie Belcher (Nathan), and six great grandchildren, Nolan and Marissa Coe, Gisele and Emerson Bast, and Megan and Lucas Belcher.  Also survived by brother Dan Marshall (Edith), sister Dorothy Wills, and sister-in-law Pat Marshall as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Youth Unlimited of Oxford, or Alzheimer Society of Oxford would be appreciated by the family. Donations can be made through the funeral home.   A private family service will be held later.

WESTOVER: Bryce of Woodstock and formerly of Toronto

Richard John Bryce Westover (April 6, 1919—June 2, 2018)

Richard John Bryce Westover lived and enjoyed a full and fulfilling life into his 100th year. Born in Toronto in 1919, Bryce (as he was known by most) spent parts of his childhood in Blenheim, St. Mary’s, and Woodstock but his fondest memories were in The Junction in Toronto. He attended Runnymede Collegiate, remembering names of friends and teachers well into his 90s. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy ?in 1942, serving as both a stoker and a Junior Petty Officer aboard the minesweeper HMCS Kentville in the St. Lawrence and the North Atlantic. After the war, he joined the Canadian Pacific Railroad in Toronto as a fireman, then an engineer. He moved to Woodstock in 1975, and retired in 1981.  His retirement years were spent golfing (mainly at Ingersoll and Cedar Creek Golf Clubs), watching the Masters every April, curling, bowling and taking lots of trips to the Woodstock Public Library. He was pre-deceased by his parents William and Elsie, sister Jeanne, brothers William and Donald, his wife of almost 61 years Grace (nee Trewin) and two beloved cats Midge and Bubbles. He is survived by daughters Gayle and Jill, grandchildren Jon (Deb), Susan, Diane (Jeremy), Sean and Luc (Nicole) and great-grandchildren Kyle, Zack, Parker, and Shaughnessy. Much loved and respected, the world has lost a good man. Friends will be received for an Open House at the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME69 Wellington Street North, Woodstock, 519-537-3611, on Friday June 8, 2018, 1—5pm.  GRAY, Mary Francis (nee McGee) – In loving memory of Mary Francis Gray (nee McGee), who passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018, at her home in her 99th year.  Cherished daughter of the late John McGee and the late Sarah McGee (nee Hunter) of Five Mile Town, Northern Ireland.  Beloved wife of the late William (Bill) Frank Gray.  Loving mother of William John Gray (Betty Rae), Anne Schroeder (Udo), Garry Francis Gray (Linda), Brian Gray, (Charmaine), Dawn Easby, Christine Blais (life partner Larry Lee), David Gray (Nancy), Shannon Scott (Steve), Toni Wilkens (Brian) and Susan Mary Gray (deceased).  Mary will be sadly missed by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren throughout Canada and Japan.  Mary was born in Clogher, Northern Ireland on January 14, 1920.  Mary was predeceased by her sisters Katherine Colorne, Ann Nazavro, Theresa Gray, Gertrude Kelly, and brothers John Jr. McGee and Shamus McGee.  Mary was a dear sister-in-law to Mabel Needham (Garry – deceased), Joyce Martland (Bill), George Gray (Velma – deceased), Bernard Gray (Ann), Mary Carter (deceased) (Roy), Jim Gray (deceased) (Joyce), John Gray (Theresa) both deceased, Violet White (deceased).  Both Mary and her late husband Bill served their countries during the Second World War and we thank them for their sacrifices and service during a most difficult time for our freedom we enjoy today.  In keeping with Mary’s wishes cremation has taken place.  The family wishes to extend special thanks for the excellent care provided to our mother by Dr. Jeff Nichols (family physician), Susan Van Straten (Home and Community Care Coordinator), Kathy Chrysler (Caring for Seniors) and her amazing staff and to the many PSW members who provided supportive and loving care for Mom on a daily basis.  The family also wishes to thank Dawn and Garry for their personal commitment in providing a loving and safe home for our mother during her final years.  A funeral Liturgy will be held at SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington St. N., Woodstock, (519-537-3611) on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 11 am to allow family and friends to celebrate Mary’s life.  In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.  Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com

SHERMAN, Joan – Passed away peacefully on Friday, March 9, 2018 Joan Margaret Sherman of Woodstock. Predeceased by her beloved husband Keith and her parents Marion and Thomas Meloche and step-mother, Hazel Meloche. Dear mother of Lana Sherman and her husband Fred King of New Jersey. Loving Grandmother of fourteen year old Thomas. Sister-in-law of Myrna and Roger Smith of Owen Sound and aunt of Derek Smith (Mary) of Owen Sound, David Smith (Sara) of Toronto, and Michael Smith (Mary-Ann) of Cambridge. Known for dressing in her favorite color Purple, Joan was often referred to as the “Purple Lady.” She was fortunate to have found her life-long passion of figure skating at a young age. From elementary school she begged her mother for more skating lessons at the Owen Sound Arena. She traveled to Toronto and other Ontario destinations for training and testing. She proudly became a triple Gold Medalist in figures, free skating and dancing. She began teaching in the Owen Sound area at a young age and continued when she moved to Western Ontario, primarily in Hamilton, Cambridge, Brantford, Woodstock, Paris, and Burford. Skate Ontario awarded her the 50 year coaching pin in 2011. Her coaching included being a course conductor for seminars to skaters in Western Ontario. Her students of all levels from Tiny Tots to the Canadian Championships remember the passion, strength, and discipline that she instilled in her students on and off the ice. A Memorial Mass, interment of ashes and reception will be held on Friday, May 4th, 1:00 pm at St. Mary’s Church, 554 15th St. E., Owen Sound, Ontario. MICK, Avis – Passed away at PeopleCare, Tavistock on Thursday, April 26, 2018, Avis Marguerite Mick (nee Riness) in her 98 th year. Loving mother of Wendella Baer, Ford Mick, Steve Mick (Linda) all of Woodstock and Karen Latimer (Robert) of Trout Creek. Mother-in-law of Joyce Mick and Debbie Mick. Sadly missed by her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren as well as her several nieces, nephews and extended family. Predeceased by her husband Baden Mick (1984), parents Charles and Mary (nee Ketchabaw) Riness, her brothers, sisters, daughter Joyce, sons Sanford and Daniel, daughter-in-law Shirley and son-in-law Frank Dryden. Cremation has taken place and service details will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the Gideon Bible Plan. BROADHURST, Elizabeth “Betty”,
Our prayers have been answered,
I finally arrived on Friday, May 4, 2018
The healing that had been delayed
Is now realized
No one’s in a hurry,
There’s no schedule to keep
We’re all enjoying Jesus,
Just smiling at his feet.
Betty was born in 1923 in Glasgow, Scotland, emigrated to Canada as a teen. She was a longtime resident of Woodstock where she was employed by various law firms in the city. She was predeceased by her husband Geddes “Ged” in 2012 and a son William in 2000. She is survived by her twins John (Sharon) of Woodstock and Judy Lumsden (John) of Kitchener, her 7 grandchildren; Jason (Adele) Broadhurst, Cory (Amelie) Broadhurst, Jane (Steve) Coe, Janet (Mike) Bast, Julie (Nathan) Belcher, Cody Broadhurst and Jimmy Broadhurst and 11 great grandchildren. A private family interment will follow at a later date. Donations to Oxford Youth Unlimited would be appreciated by the family. FEAVER-MANSFIELD, Susan – Passed away at VON Sakura House, Woodstock on Friday, May 4, 2018. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 28 years, Paul Mansfield. Dear sister of David Feaver (Tena) of Petrolia. Loving aunt of Jolene Feaver and Patrick Feaver. Daughter-in-law of Eleanor Mansfield of Exeter and Barbara Feaver of Grand Bend. Susan will be sadly missed by her best friend Judy Williams of Innerkip as well as Julio, Jose & Scooter; her 3 cats and Blue, Chucky & Brody, her beloved horses. Predeceased by her parents Donald and Gertrude (nee Fortier) Feaver. Susan asked that donations be made to the University of Guelph, Pet Trust Fund, c/o Alumni House. BARNES, ROBERT “BOB”, of Woodstock, Ontario

Donald Robert (Bob) Barnes June 17, 1929 – May 4, 2018. Loving husband of Barbara Joan (Bawden) for 67 years. Father of Karen (Jim) Bush, Kim (Lois) Barnes and Michael (Yvonne) Barnes. Grandfather of Rebecca (Dallas) and Christina (Greg) from Woodstock. Grandfather of Rachel (Reece), James (Emily), Lydia (Jon) and five great granddaughters all from Abbotsford, BC.   Bob grew up in Woodstock. He owned and operated businesses including Barnes Construction, The Home Centre, and H Salt Fish & Chips. He was also a building inspector for the City of Woodstock and was a member of the local Chamber of Commerce as well as the Home Builders Association.   Bob was an active member of College Ave Church where he served on the board and was a founding member of the men’s club. Bob and Barb also attended Oxford Baptist Church. The Barnes family had a hobby farm at Curries during which time Bob became a founding member and was vice president of the East Oxford Optimists.   In his retirement, Bob kept busy in his workshop, building everything from birdhouses to fine furniture. He designed waterwheels and sold them throughout the world. Even though Bob battled cancer, he kept his sense of humor right to the end. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and fellow residents of Oxford Gardens.   A Celebration of Life open house will be held at College Ave Church on Saturday, May 19 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.  If desired, donations may be made to VON Sakura House, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington St. North, Woodstock, On (519-537-3611).  Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com

MORRISON, Beatrice – Surrounded by the love of her family on Monday, May 7, 2018, Beatrice “Bea” Irene Morrison passed away peacefully at Woodingford   Lodge, Woodstock.   Beloved wife of the late Joseph P. Morrison who predeceased her on November 24, 1984.  Loving mother of Sister Teresa Morrison CPS, Mary Jo Sears (Peter), Patricia Morrison, Joe Morrison (June), Maureen Waugh and Cathy Nicholson (Ron).  Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, and extended family.  Predeceased by her parents Harold and Hazel (nee Watkins) Hilliker, her son J.P. “John” Morrison and her sisters Marie Watling and Shirley Ropp.   The family will receive friends at the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington St. N, Woodstock on   Wednesday, May 9, 2018 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Parish prayers will be said at 7:45 pm.   A funeral mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at    11 am with Father Dariusz Jagodzinski.  Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.  As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Building Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.   Smith-LeRoy, 519-537-3611.  Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com

McCreery, Ruth – Lover of life, family and nature passed away on Wednesday,
April 25, 2018 at Oxford Gardens Retirement Residence, Woodstock at the age of 89. Beloved wife of the late George McCreery (1989). Loving mother of Hugh McCreery (Carol), Jane Wilson (Michael), Jennifer Martin (Gene), John McCreery (Joanne), Joel McCreery and Liam McCreery (Susanne). Sadly missed by her grandchildren Jennifer (Andrew), Liam (Alyssha), Laura, Jennifer, Riley, Keelan (Sarah), Seren (Wes), late Lisa (1991), Christina, Anthony, William, George, Ian, Linnea, Jacob, Nathan, Liam and Kathleen; as well as her great-grandchildren Benjamin, Adam, Owen, Lucas, Lexie, Desmond, Miles, Wyatt and Maeve. “In memory of Ruth’s loving spirit, make a point of showing kindness to a stranger.” The family will receive friends at the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington St. N, Woodstock on Friday, April 27, 2018 from 4 – 8 pm for a memorial gathering. YATES, Alma Jean – December 1, 1930 – April 21, 2018, Passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family at VON Sakura House on Saturday, April 21, 2018.  Alma Jean Yates (nee Pitcher) of Woodstock and formerly of Trinity Bay, NFLD, in her 88th year.  Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, are her devoted husband of 64 years, Leigh, daughter Karen (Keith) and son Ken (Kathy).  Loving Nan to Kirk (Emily), Kaeleigh and Kristopher (Diane).  Dear sister of Mildred Cooper (late Gordon), Ruby Hopkins (Charles), Bramwell (Margaret), Wayne (Christine); sisters-in-law Gladys Pitcher and Myrtis Pitcher, brothers-in-law Bruce (Joan) and Keith (Phyllis).  Also survived by a large number of nephews and nieces.  Predeceased by her parents, William and Selina, daughter Lori, brothers Norman and Donald, sister-in-law Fern, mother-in-law Ethel and father-in-law George.  Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place at St. David’s United Church, Woodstock at a later date.  If desired, memorial donations to VON Sakura House would be greatly appreciated and may be arranged through SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, Woodstock, (519-537-3611).  Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com

WANKLIN, Les Thomas – Passed away at University Hospital, London on Friday, April 20, 2018 in his 70th year.  Husband of Sue Wanklin of 46 years.  Father to Becky Wanklin and Amy Wanklin.  Brother-in-law to Pat Morrison (Stew Wilson), Sherrie Myers and Deb Webb (Kim).  Also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by his parents Ed and Betty Wanklin.  He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.  His family would like to thank the doctor’s and the 7th floor nurses and ICU nurses at University Hospital.  As per Les’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  Memorial donations to The Canada Brain Research Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated and may be arranged through SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, Woodstock,  519-537-3611.  Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com
