BROWN; Ruth Anne of Petrolia

Posted by on January 11, 2017

Ruth Anne (O’Dell) Brown, beloved only sister of Diane O’Dell, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Sarnia, on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

She lived her entire life in Petrolia where she was a teacher, mentor, friend, and above all….loving servant of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Ruth’s anchor was her steadfast faith which she shared in practical, quiet, and unassuming ways.

Ruth’s passion for teaching began in her early teenage years when she began teaching Sunday School at First Baptist Church, Petrolia.  Her subsequent leadership in the children’s programs at First Baptist became a lifelong commitment.  In addition, she served on the Deacons’ Board for the past several years.

Ruth’s formal teaching career (Lambton County Board of Education) spanned thirty-seven years of teaching Kindergarten, grade one, and grade two. Upon her retirement in 1994, she became one ofthe founding Directors of the Lambton Youth Choir.  She was also an ‘avid fan’ and supporter of Victoria Playhouse, Petrolia, where she not only enjoyed going to the theatre, but also billeting members of the cast and crew in her home throughout the theatre season.

Ruth was ‘a born teacher’.  She nurtured children, she ‘mothered them’, and she faithfully prayed for them.  It was her desire that all children – in Sunday School, in her classes, in the Lambton Youth Choir, and her ‘sponsored children’ from around the world – would know that Jesus loves them.

A song commissioned in celebration of her ‘special’ birthday and composed by Don Besig & Nancy Price concludes with the simple declaration of her faith, “Yes, Jesus Loves Me.  That’s all I need to know.”

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Ron Brown (1984) and her parents, Rita (‘Dot’) O’Dell (1989), and James O’Dell (1999).  She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kim & Sue Brown and her niece, Jennifer Brown.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 15, at 2:00 PM from First Baptist Church, 418 Greenfield St., Petrolia.  A private interment will be in Hillsdale Cemetery, Petrolia

Memorial Donations to St. Joseph’s Hospice, Sarnia, (www.stjosephshospice.ca) or First Baptist Church, Petrolia.  Memories and condolences may be shared on-line at www.needhamjay.com.

Our Dad/Opa peacefully went to his heavenly home on October 15, 2016 at the age of 89. JOHN (JAN) SCHENK was born on January 6th, 1927 in Andijk, Noord Holland. He was the first of five children from Willem and Grietje Schenk. At the age of 23 he immigrated to Canada where he was reunited with his sweetheart, Wilma Bos, whom he married on May 18, 1951. They began their life together in Chatham Ontario and a few years later they moved to the Wyoming area where John and Wilma lived and raised their family of seven children. John worked hard all his life. He was a farmer at heart and enjoyed many years working alongside his son until he was unable to do so. John also kept busy; owning and working at “The Dutch Shoppe” in Sarnia, volunteering on different boards especially with what was then called the “Association for the Mentally Handicapped”. He had a passion for both his church and the Christian School, both of which he served faithfully.

John was the loving husband of Wilma (deceased 2005) and will be remembered by his children: Cathy Schenk (Steve Oughtred) of Huntsville, Margaret Hulshof of Bright’s Grove, Yvonne (John) Veenstra of Windsor, William (Diana) Schenk of Wyoming, Sharon (Sid) Bandstra of Terrace, BC, Barb (Glenn) Bandstra of Smithers, BC and the most special of all, Kevin Schenk of Sarnia. He will also be missed by his 20 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren with #16 due any day.

He also leaves behind his siblings: Morris, (deceased 2013) (Vicki) Schenk of Sarnia, Bill (Marguerite) Schenk of Sarnia, Grietje (Arie) Brouwer of Watford and Pete (Tina) Schenk of Sarnia.

Visitation will be at Needham Jay Funeral Home, 650 Broadway Street, Wyoming on Friday, October 21, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm.

Funeral services will be held at the Wyoming Christian Reformed Church on Saturday, October 22 at 11:00 am.

Bryce, Robert “Bob” of Wyoming

Posted by on October 3, 2016

Surrounded by family on Sunday October 2, 2016 at Lambton Meadowview Villa, Petrolia, Robert “Bob” Wesley Bryce of Wyoming, passed away in his 91st year. Beloved husband of Pearl Bryce (Gilliland) (nee Campbell) for 64 years. Loving father to Douglas (Shirley) Gilliland, Marion (the late Hubert) Blue, Gary Bryce, Allan Bryce, Beth (Jack) Karr. Cherished grandfather to Deanna Blue, Robert (Tobi) Blue, David (Kim) Blue, Jody Gilliland, Jason Gilliland and John Gilliland and many great-grandchildren. Dear brother to Peg (Dave) Hutton, Kate (the late Ray) Freer, Barb (the late Al) Mack, Carol (George) Spencer, Doug (Maureen) Bryce, Marie (the late Bill) George. He will be dearly missed by many family members and distant family members. He is predeceased by 7 siblings. Bob had a wonderfully rich life. He and Pearl travelled in a motorhome from coast to coast, loved spending time at their cottage in Port Albert and cherished their time around close family and friends. He was very attached to his dog Mandy, who was a dedicated friend and companion. As a farmer for many years, Bob had a deep connection with nature, loved being outdoors in the crisp cool fall air. Dancing and rabbit hunting may seem like an unlikely duo, but not for Bob and Pearl, who’s many a Friday and Saturday night included both, followed by drinks and dinner at midnight. As years flew by, dancing turned into drives to the Bluewater bridge, with McDonalds in hand, to sit side by side to watch the boats go by. A private funeral service will take place followed by the interment in Wyoming Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Needham-Jay Funeral Home in Petrolia, (519) 882-0100. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made by cheque to the Sarnia Humane Society or the charity of your choice. Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.needhamjay.com
