BOWMAN: Israel of Hanover

Posted by on December 19, 2015

bowman-webIsrael passed away peacefully on December 18, 2015 after a brave battle with cancer.  His family stood vigil in his last hours.  Husband, father and friend, Israel was committed to his family, his faith, and his love of crokinole.

He was born in Waterloo County, the only child in an Old Order Mennonite family.  He was raised in the village of St. Jacobs, where he once said, “Every back door was open to me as a child.”  Israel married Anna Martin in 1952, and she survives him with their five children – Linda (John), Lynette (Jim), Linford (Dale), Raylene (Lance) and Brian (Marianne).  He found renewed joy in his eight grandchildren – Leslie, Andrew, Heather, Arlen, Luke, R.J., Chad, and Gregory.  He was blessed with his first great grandchild, Ivo, early this year.  He was committed to his family, and wanted the best for everyone.  He was a gentle soul with many friends who loved him.  During his final days, his care workers called him “Mr. Smiley” even though he had lost the ability to speak.

Israel and Anna inherited the Bowman Weavery in 1970, and ran the family business until 1995, when they sold the store and moved from St. Jacobs to Hanover, Ontario.  He enjoyed his retirement forming a crokinole club with the seniors, driving the backroads of Bruce and Grey Counties, and being involved with the church fellowship.  He was once an avid camper, and loved nothing more than packing up the car, his family, and heading off to some remote corner of Ontario to ‘survive’ for the weekend.  He was never happier than when he had four wheels on the road.

Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover on Monday, December 21, 2015 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm, where a Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 11:00 am.  Rev. Juanita Laverty officiating.  A private family interment was held at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.
