Finnerty, Leslie Gordon of Barrie, Ontario

Posted by on November 21, 2018

FINNERTY, LESLIE GORDON – June 24, 1934 – November 16, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family share his peaceful passing while listening to his favourite Irish music on Friday November 16th at Millcreek Care Centre, Barrie, ON. Predeceased by his beloved wife Isobel (Church). Loving and devoted father of Lorne and John.  Adored father in law of Debbie Foll. Cherished and fun-loving Papa of Erin and Jeff.  Survived by sisters Juilita, Joanne (passed the next morning) and Noreen.  Predeceased by brother Pat. Les will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, his curling and card buddies, McInnis Lake cottagers, family, and friends. The family would like to express their grateful thanks to all the staff of Mill Creek Care Centre who took such wonderful care of Les over the last 5 months.
Les was the beloved first born of Ambrose and Mary Kate Finnerty (Stack) in Kirkland Lake, ON in 1934.  He was raised and eventually married in Timmins.  After a short stint in mining and other entrepreneurial ventures, he pursued a career with the CNR which entailed many relocations throughout Ontario. During his lengthy CNR career he embraced many challenges, developed lasting relationships and was a mentor and inspiration to many.
He was the responsible eldest of five, who, upon the early death of his father, became a source of guidance and financial support for his mother and younger sisters. A broken nose at the high school football tryouts made him seek more benign leisure pursuits such as dancing, singing, charming women, skiing, golfing, bridge and bargain hunting.
In 1957 he married Isobel Church and together they raised Lorne and John, providing many enjoyable memories, especially summers at McInnis Lake.  For sixty years he was a devoted husband, travel companion and champion of her political career, with special pride in her appointment to the Senate.  Finally, he was her steadfast reliable caregiver.  Together they delighted in their grandchildren Erin and Jeff.
As a longtime member of Burlington Golf and County Club, Les was equally famous for his annual Santa Claus performances as he was for his curling prowess.  Friends were reluctant to share a confidence lest it be exposed during his Christmas gig.
Les’s predominant traits were his eternal optimism, and steely resilience.  These attributes trace their origin to his Irish ancestors whose courage and perseverance allowed them to survive the famine ship voyage to Canada in search of a better life.  At an early age he would accompany his father’s fiddle music on the piano.  With very little provocation he would sing his entire Irish repertoire, never repeating the same song twice.  He could call and lead a square dance simultaneously.  He was a witty storyteller with an endless source of material.  He was a genuine extrovert and a great entertainer.  He was proud to be known as the family ambassador to some eighty, first cousins, reaching out to maintain family bonds.

In every aspect of his life he nurtured and cherished lasting friendships.  If you are one of those fortunate acquaintances either recent or long term, Les invites you to honour his memory with a song called “The Parting Glass” by Liam Clancy and a toast to all his great family and friends!

Moore- Doris Alice (nee Johnson) Born 9 Nov 1937 in Nottingham, England and passed away 22 October 2018.  She was young athlete who loved cycling and long-distance swimming.  She emigrated to Canada, married Jerry and had two children, Richard and Sue.  Her family was the light of her life until she had grandchildren.  She spoiled each and everyone with as much love as she could as often as she could.  Our family has grown and she welcomed everyone with open arms.  Late in life she was lucky to find love again with Wilf.  Doris was a cheerful, supportive, helpful person who was always ready with a smile, hug and a kind word.  She loved gardening, music, coffee, ice cream, Christmas, dogs and fast cars like her 1966 Charger!  We lost the centerpiece of our family.  She leaves us with a hole in our hearts that can’t be filled but the memories we have will keep us warm for a lifetime.  So for those that never met her, you would have loved her.

We invite family and friends to a Celebration of Life to be held at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 385, 105 Industrial Parkway North in Aurora on 10 November 2018 at 1pm.

Memorial donations may be made to the O.S.P.C.A. Condolences may be placed at www.drivercremation.ca

Afterglow
by Helen Lowrie Marshall
“I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun
of happy memories
that I leave when life is done.”

Posted by on January 29, 2018

Mary Elizabeth McConney – It is with sad hearts the family of Mary Elizabeth Maclachlan McConney (nee White) would like to announce her passing on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in her 90th year at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie after a  long illness. Although she had a long journey with her illness, she met and fought it with her typical strength and resolve which she kept along with her sense of humour until the end. Mary was pre-deceased by her loving husband Bob McConney and her daughter Judy McConney. She is lovingly remembered by her children Garnet , Sandy, Fraser and Sheila, daughter in laws Fiona, Michelle, Jan as well her six grandchildren Kate, Jesse, Duncan, Julia, Alex, Rachel, great granddaughter Jude as well as numerous extended family. All who knew her will realize there is not enough space to mention all of her close friends as there were many of them. Mary was born on November 18,1928 to John and Marjorie White in Toronto. She was raised by the Scarborough bluffs and attended Birchcliff Public School, Scarborough Collegiate and the University of Toronto Dental Nursing School. Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mills, Dr. Stevens, Dr. Ng and all of their staff at the Department Of Oncology at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, in Barrie as well as all of the staff from Saint Elizabeth Health Care. Mom’s care could not have been better. Our special thanks to Hospice Simcoe for all the special loving care over the last month of her life. Mom thought as we do, that Hospice Simcoe is truly a special place for the dying as well as the grieving. In memory of Mary, donations to Hospice Simcoe would be appreciated.
