Lyle Jacobs of Wheatley

Posted by on November 14, 2012

February 21, 1930 – November 12, 2012

Lyle Jacobs of Wheatley, Ontario, in his 83rd year, passed peacefully at his residence at The Meadows with family at his side. Husband of Barbara (née Morris), Leamington. Beloved father of Brenda Renaud (Gary), Quispamsis NB; Carolyn Recker (Bill), Wheatley; Chuck Jacobs (Vicki), Skead ON; and Velma Armstrong (Kaye), Sprucedale ON. Special ‘Gramps’ to nine grandchildren: Chad Recker (Elisa), Beth Stevenson (Ryan), Dan Armstrong (Jodie), Cori Recker, Lainie Sallmen (Jason), Craig Jacobs, Julian Renaud, Angelina Jacobs, and Rick Armstrong (Miranda). Proud great-grandfather to Taylor Armstrong; Lucas, Logan and Jaydan Sallmen; Ben, Meghan and Jonathan Recker; and Kaelyn Armstrong. Lyle is also survived by brothers Elmer (Janise), Wheatley; Ray (Gayle), Algonquin IL; Fred (Betty), Essex; and sisters Eileen Hooker-Dolata, Wheatley, and Mary Fleury (Paul), Tilbury. Pre-deceased by parents John Leslie and Mabel Alice (Schuler) Jacobs, and brothers Frank and Garland. Lyle was born and raised in Romney Township. His voice could carry easily between the farm where he raised his family and the dairy farm where he was raised. He was employed by H.J. Heinz Company in Leamington for many years, before becoming Clerk-Treasurer of Romney Township. Lyle was a life member of Xenophon Lodge No. 448, Wheatley, and of King Cyrus Chapter No. 119 R.A.M., Leamington, and a proud member of the Mocha Shriners, London district. The real joys in his life were music, cards, fishing, hunting, and family. Lyle taught himself to play guitar and really enjoyed having an audience for his more ‘bawdy’ songs. Even in his last days, Lyle yodelled along to Wilf Carter songs. One of his favourite pastimes was playing cards, and in euchre (with or without the ‘Joes’) he could remember which card had been played much longer than was sometimes good for family peace. His prowess with a shotgun on a jackrabbit drive or pheasant hunt didn’t seem to carry over to his rifles: he would often relate that he missed dozens more deer than he ever hit. As a founding member of the Lilypad Snaggers Club, Lyle introduced many people to Lake Cassidy for fishing trips. He instilled in his children a love of all of these activities, to varying degrees. Long after his pilot’s license expired, he kept the airplane runway. His nickname of “Fire Chief” may have come from his fires for the corn roasts at the annual fly-in; it may also have come from his penchant for starting them at sometimes inopportune moments. Family get-togethers were always a lively time, and the more the merrier – friends were always welcome. In the past few years, Lyle enjoyed his daily trips to the farm with William and Don Getty. He loved snapping Polaroids of family and friends, and decorated his room with dozens of pictures. At Dad’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Arrangements for cremation entrusted to Hammond Funeral Home, 17 Little Street South, Wheatley ON (519-825-7741). Donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, or the Westover Treatment Centre, Thamesville. The family would like to thank the staff at The Meadows, Wheatley, for providing Dad’s care for the past six years, and making a home for him.   www.hammondfuneralhome.ca
