SCAFE: Margaret “Marg” Marion, of Rodney

Posted by on February 11, 2017

Margaret Marion Scafe (née Fairles), known as Marg, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2017, at her home in Caledonia Gardens with the supportive care of CCAC, VON Palliative Enhanced Care Team and the frequent visits from her much loved West Elgin Community Health Centre team.  Marg is predeceased by her parents Eva (née Gregory) and T.A. “Bert” Fairles, brothers Bob (Verna), Ernie (Georgina), daughter-in-law Patricia (Kelly) Scafe, sons Clare (2002) and Dave (2007).  She is survived by daughter-in-law Gerry and grandchildren Tracy (Nigel) Bradshaw and their children Mitch and Kaitlyn, Brian (Julie) Scafe, daughter-in-law Joy (Pete McBrayne) and Joy’s family.  Survived also by nieces Bev (late Bob) Padfield, Bruce (Brenda) Fairles, Pam (Roger) Greenwell.  Marg will be remembered by her late daughter-in-law, Pat and her family Barbara (Ed) East, Marilyn Johnston, Gary (Marlene) Brooks and family friend Roy Perovich.  Marg will also be missed by her long-time friend, Jean Wight.  Marg was a life long worker at the popular family grocery store in Rodney in the 60’s and 70’s, known as Fairles’s.  Marg, along with her brother Ernie, helped Bert make the store the success that it was.  A long-time employee, Jean White, also contributed to this success.  The family business would later carry on under the operation of Clare, Marg’s oldest son.  Marg always said “our passions are the key to our happiness”. Some of Marg’s passions included; learning and travelling, the game of baseball, in particular, the St. Louis Cardinals, and later, learning the game of curling by listening to it on T.V.  For the last twenty years, Marg was considered legally blind. Through her entire life, Marg was a fiercely independent woman. During the last thirteen years, she was able to be active with help from the West Lorne Transportation Network (Nancy Mott), in particular, Claire Champ, who was most recently Marg’s driver.  Because of this special service, Marg was able to attend Soup’s On and other community programs.  Living at Caledonia Gardens allowed Marg to remain independent by walking over to the Bobier Villa to participate in events such as the Adult Day Program and Diners Club.  Marg’s final wish was to remain in her home and this wish was supported through the care of West Elgin Community Health Centre’s Assisted Living Team and most recently, the enhanced palliative care team through C.C.A.C.-V.O.N. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Kevin Mardell, Rick VanderHeide, Bill Nicholson, W.E.C.H.C. Assisted Living Team, C.C.A.C., V.O.N. Enhanced Palliative Care Team and Marg’s neighbours at Caledonia Gardens for their friendship over the years.  Marg’s final wish could not have been granted without each of you, thank you.  A Funeral Service to celebrate Marg’s life will be held at DENNING’S OF RODNEY, 212 Furnival Road, Rodney (519-785-0810) on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 commencing at 2 p.m.  Visitation will precede the Service from 12-2 p.m.  Interment in Rodney Cemetery.  In memory of Marg, donations may be made, payable by cheque, to W.E.C.H.C., V.O.N., Bobier Villa or a charity of choice.  Condolences online at denning.ca

CAVERHILL: Richard J. T. of Strathroy

Posted by on February 3, 2017

It is with sadness we announce that on Monday, January 30, 2017 Richard John Thomas Caverhill passed away suddenly at his home in Strathroy, Ontario at the age of 74. Rick had recently moved from his beloved Sprucedale Orchards, near Ilderton Ontario, where he grew the best apples in the land.  Rick was born on December 8, 1942 to George Arthur Caverhill and Elizabeth Jane (Jennie) Ideson in St Lambert, Quebec, where George was stationed with the Air Force. On October 6, 1973 Rick married Beverly Jane Rand, in Yarmouth, N S.  Rick enjoyed baseball and grew up playing shortstop for South Lobo;(apparently they always beat North Lobo.)  In his younger years Rick loved music and played in a band, which is how he met his wife, Bev. Rick received a degree in education and taught school for awhile but it was in the orchard where he was comfortable. He was a quiet man with a generous heart. He was a long-time member of Doric Masonic Lodge and served many years on the executive.  Rick was pre-deceased by his father, George and his mother, Jennie.  Rick is survived by his wife, Bev, brother-in-law Fred Rand (Catherine) nephew Gregory, niece Victoria, and will be greatly missed by his sister-in-law Cathy Smith (Alan) and their children Matthew, Ryan and Elizabeth who have fond memories of times spent with Rick in the orchard, garden and squeezing cider.  Friends will be received at DENNING’S OF STRATHROY 519-245-1023 on Saturday, February 4, 2017 from 10:00 am until the time of the memorial service at 11:00 AM, reception to follow.  Interment in Ivan Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.  Online condolences accepted at www.denning.ca
