Parker, Marion “Katie” (nee Vair)

Posted by on April 13, 2016

Marion “Katie” Alemath Parker (nee Vair)ParkerMarion

Left this world to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Woods Park Care Centre in Barrie at 97 years of age. Marion was a devoted Christian and an active member of Trinity Anglican Church in Barrie and St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Minden.

Marion was born in Allendale and over the years lived in Barrie, Minden and at her cottage on Naiscoot Lake. From her early years Marion loved sports and played basketball and volleyball at Barrie Collegiate Institute where she was given the nickname Katie, which she kept for the rest of her life. Later she loved to lawn bowl and curl, and was a member of the Barrie and Minden Curling Clubs. In 2005 she celebrated 50 consecutive years of curling with family, friends, and fellow curlers. Also an avid CFL fan she hosted and participated in Grey Cup parties along with her husband Elton for many years. Katie was also a crack shot with a rifle and in her earlier years often went duck hunting in the fall with Elton. She wrote poetry and was dedicated to sharing her experience at her beloved cottage, “How Come” through her journals.

Katie loved and was married to Elton Parker for 44 exciting years until his passing in 1984. Although she was an only child she started to become a very large family beginning with her four children, Jon (Gloria), Brian (Joan), Jamie (Sandy) and she always said she “finally got it right” when she had a girl, Noni (Stephen). She had eight grandchildren, Brydon, Stirling, Amy, Joel, Amanda, Matthew, Sean and Ian. Then came along ten great-grandchildren, Meghan, Ruthie, Caleb, Jacob, Jack, Cole, William, Beau, Seth and Sadey. In Katie’s words, “Holy Dum Doodle!”

Cremation has taken place and a celebration to honour her life will be held a later date. ADAMS FUNERAL HOME (445 St. Vincent Street, Barrie) in care of arrangements. Messages of condolence may be forwarded to the family through adamsfuneralhome.ca

We would like to acknowledge the very special companionship and friendship provided by Laura Amon over the last 10 years. Through her visits she became like one of Marion’s family and spent many wonderful hours with her. We are also very grateful to and wish to extend our special thanks to her warm and caring care givers on the 2nd and 3rd floors at Woods Park Care Centre and to Dr. McConvey for his compassionate care.

de Grosbois, Marie (nee Anne Marie Ronan)

Peacefully, on September 4, 2014, at Victoria Village Manor, Barrie. Beloved wife of 51 years to Paul who passed away in 2001.  Marie was born in Colgan, Ontario on September 7, 1920.  She is survived by her nine children: Stephen (Judy) of Bracebridge, Robert of Toronto, Edward of Barrie, Marc (Celine) of Niagara-on-the-Lake, William of North Bay, Anne Marie (Joerg Matschullat) of Freiberg, Germany, John (Dana) of Burlington, Florence Friel (Vincent) of Barrie, and Teresa of Calgary. She is also survived by her brother William (Frances) of Beeton, Ontario, son in- law Andrew Fox and daughter in-law Diane de Grosbois. Marie dearly loved her fifteen wonderful grandchildren: Kristin, John, Joshua, and Adam; Christian; Ezra; Alexandra, Amy, Thomas, Catherine, Jane and Tara; Rae and Fiona; and Adalyn and Karina.  There is one great grandchild, Owen and many nieces and nephews.  She was pre-deceased by her brothers Hugh, Rev Edward Ronan CSB and her sister Rita.  Marie graduated from University of Western Ontario (Assumption College, Windsor) with a degree in liberal arts in 1941. During and immediately after WWII she worked at the National Research Council, the Canadian Geographical Journal and at the Catholic Center (University of Ottawa) in Ottawa. She married Paul in 1949 while he was still in the Army and subsequently travelled with him to seven different cities as he pursued his career in medicine.  They finally decided that North Bay, Ontario was the ideal place to raise their family and lived there for many years.  In retirement, she migrated happily with Paul between Aylen Lake, Ontario and Tampa Florida.   After Paul passed away in 2001, she resided at various times in Petawawa, Mississauga and Midhurst Ontario.  She loved reading and keeping files on a wide range of subjects which interested her and could provide research on an amazing number of topics long before the internet was created. She encouraged Paul to purchase one of the very first personal computers (an Osborne).  In her later years she became especially interested in nutrition and health and truly believed that you are what you eat.  Her recipe for a happy life was based on seeing the good in people and trying to draw it out.  On the last day of the year she would always make time to name her blessings and count them.  She leaves this world a better place for her generous, loving presence. The family wish to thank the nursing staff and personal support workers at Victoria Village Manor for their loving and attentive care of Marie. de Grosbois MAINFriends may call at ADAMS FUNERAL HOME (445 St.Vincent Street, Barrie) on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 7pm to 9 pm.
