Rock 3Raymond Rock – of Listowel, formerly of RR2 Atwood, passed away unexpectedly at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Friday November 14, 2014 in his 77th year. Raymond was a member of 2nd St. John’s Lutheran Church, Wartburg and a life member of the Atwood Lion’s Club where he willing served his community for 48 years. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking in his spare time.

Beloved husband of Marg (Dietze) Rock whom he married in 1961. Loving father of Matthew and Angie Rock, and Cheryl and Allan Krotz. Special grandpa of Rochelle Rock, Jasmine Rock, Nolan Krotz and Michelle, Jenna and Steve Morris and their daughter Olivia, and Kelby Krotz and Brett. Brother and brother-in-law of Barbara Rock, Mark H. and Kathy Rock, Joel and Marilyn Rock. Fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews and cousins.

Predeceased by his parents John and Myrn (Diehl) Rock and his brothers Donald and John.

Shirley Verstoep – passed away peacefully at Ritz Lutheran Villa on Thursday October 23, 2014 at the age of 83. Shirley was a devoted member of the Monkton United Church and a long time member of the Women’s Institute. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.

Beloved wife for 59 years of Adrian Verstoep. Loving mother of Marian Hutchinson, Hugh and Pearl Verstoep, Marjorie and David Lindsay, Linda and Ted Groenestege, Barbara Verstoep, Leo Verstoep, Leona and Jeff Donaldson. Missed by her 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law Doris Lamont and Jean Storey, five brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law in the Netherlands and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents Hugh and Mary (Burgess) Lamont, brothers Jim, Leonard and Graham, her sister Doreen and her husband George Seip and nephew Terrance Seip.

Jim will be remembered by the community as a mentor and friend to many people, both young and old. At Christmas time, Jim enjoyed playing Santa Claus at many church and family functions.

Beloved husband of Anne (Hurst) Cooper whom he married in 1969. Arlan resided at Nithview Community, New Hamburg and was formerly of Millbank. He was a member of Heritage Mennonite Church, Millbank and had served with the Gospel Echoes prison ministry for many years. Arlan enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family and friends.

Florence was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Listowel, Perth Star Rebekah Lodge No. 331, Loyal True Blue Lodge No. 415 Trowbridge and the Wallace Women’s Missionary Society. She will be remembered by many as the person who was always there for anybody who needed help.

Beloved wife of the late Bill Broughton who predeceased her in 1981. Sister-in-law of Gwen, Pearl, Dorothy, Millie, Helen, Lottie, Georgina and Bob. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Henry was an all around outdoors man enjoying hunting, riding his ATV, cutting wood in the bush and puttering around Monkton on his golf cart.

Beloved husband of the late Beatrice (Wourms) Stolz who predeceased him in 2004. Loving father of Stan and Glenda Stolz, Stella and Calvin Haug, and Dianne and Jason Heilman. Special grandpa of Derick, Nicholas, Tyler and Jen and their daughter Mia, Nathan, Michael, Daniel, Shannah and Michael. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Henry was the last surviving member of his family, being predeceased by his parents Joseph and Katherine (Etchon) Stolz, one brother and four sisters. Predeceased by his children Mary and Joseph in infancy.

Peebles, StuartStuart Peebles – formerly of Atwood, passed away peacefully at Stratford General Hospital on August 16, 2014 at the age of 93. Stuart resided at Ritz Lutheran Villa, Mitchell with his beloved wife Jean whom he married in 1958. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Monkton, a life member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 332 and a former member of the Atwood Men’s Chorus. Stuart was an avid gardener specializing in growing roses, did many free-hand drawings and paintings of nature scenes and loved doing crossword and word search puzzles. He served in the Reserves during World War II.

Survived by his wife Jean (Yeoman) Peebles. Loving father of Doug Peebles, Mary and Stephen Reed, Moira and Trevor Barnes, Muriel Vandepol and Paul Coupé, Les and Lori Peebles. Special grandpa of Brian Peebles and Stacey Fletcher, Russ Peebles, Jen Peebles and Ken Buck, Natasha Reed and Nick Tuskan, Nigel Reed, Alycia Reed, Danica Barnes and Aaron Ogunsanya, Nathan Barnes, Nicole Vandepol and Kevin Andrew, Brett Vandepol, Megan Peebles and great-grandpa of Damian, Evelyn, Dominic and Mackenzie. Holmes, HildaHilda Holmes – formerly of Listowel, passed away peacefully at Brucelea Haven, Walkerton on Sunday August 3, 2014 at the age of 97. Hilda was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Listowel. She was a member of the Dorcas Group of Christ Anglican Church until they disbanded in 2005 and a former member of North Star Circle. Hilda was an avid gardener, card player and euchre champion. She received many first place ribbons at local fairs for her quilts. Hilda enjoyed all the time spent with her family.

Beloved wife of the late Cecil Holmes who predeceased her in 1986. Loving mother of Marjorie Palmer of Richmond Hill and Reta Cunningham of Walkerton. Dorothea was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Pretswell) Keith. She was a member of Trowbridge United Church and a life member of Trowbridge U.C.W.  She enjoyed quilting, knitting, playing cards and spending time with her family.

Beloved wife of the late Alfred Green who predeceased her in 2003. Loving mother of Doug of RR2 Listowel, Don and Maria of Monkton. Special grandma of Wesley of Mississauga, Tina and Jesse Beirnes of Listowel, Jesse of Monkton and great grandma of Parker Beirnes. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Bowman, RalphRalph Bowman – of Listowel, formerly of Atwood, passed away peacefully at Livingstone Manor on Thursday June 19, 2014 at the age of 86.  He was born in Hershel, Saskatchewan on January 9, 1928 to parents Arthur and Elsie (Rea) Bowman. Ralph and his family moved from Saskatchewan to Ontario in 1946 and worked for his dad until he married the love of his life, Muriel on January 2, 1954 on the farm at the 2nd of Elma. Ralph and Muriel moved to Britton and took up farming for approximately ten years. Ralph decided to change careers, became a licensed welder and sheet metal operator. He worked for AH Bowman Manufacturing in Atwood and during that time, he bought 10 acres of land on Monument Road and did hobby farming with chickens, ponies, rabbits as well as gardening with his wife. In 1972, he made another career change and became a general contractor, built his own solar heated house and subdivided the rest of the land, known now as Bowman Court. In 1982, he became the owner/operator of the local gas station in Atwood naming it Ralph’s Service Centre. In 1992 he sold the gas station to his two sons, bought an RV and traveled North America with Muriel. During his life, Ralph was a member of the AtwoodUnitedChurch, Britton Orange Lodge and the Atwood Lions Club. He was involved with his children and their sports by being a baseball coach, baseball umpire, hockey coach and a Scout leader for 10+ years. He continued to be an avid sports fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays.

Beloved husband of the late Muriel (Porterfield) Bowman who predeceased him in 2005. Loving father of Neil and Karen of Listowel, Reg of Brantford, Greg and Roxanne, and Trent all of Atwood. Special grandfather of Lori and Shawn Ward of Listowel, Philip of London, Cara, and Scott both of Atwood and great-grandfather of Spencer, Noah and Ella Ward. Brother of Doreen Hill of Saskatchewan and Earl and Nancy Bowman of Listowel, brother-in-law of Grace Porterfield of Listowel. Fondly remembered by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law Howard Hill.

Walsh, SteveStephen Walsh – of Listowel passed away peacefully at ListowelMemorialHospital on Tuesday June 10, 2014 at the age of 81. After retirement from CP Rail, Stephen enjoyed wood working and took great pride in his finished products.

Survived by Olive Coghlin-Walsh, step-children, Ric and Barb, Brian and Cheryl, Paul and Andrea, Brenda Nieves, 13 Coghlin grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Father of Robert Walsh, Luan and Pat Kenney, Ken Walsh, Keith Walsh, Marjorie and Jeff King, John Dool, Suzanne Dool. Grandfather of Tammy, Ron, Andrew, Laurel, Jillian, Tabitha, Stephen, Daniel, Karlee, Paul, Richard, Stephanie, Braygen and great-grandfather to many great-grandchildren. Brother of Ronald and Rene Walsh, Stuart and Vivian Walsh. Remembered by his mother-in-law Rita Proteau and many Roux and Willard relatives. Fondly remembered by his nephew Steve Lewis and many other nieces and nephews.

Cleland, David Alexander – of Kitchener, passed away quietly with his son and daughter at his residence on Friday May 23, 2014 at the age of 91. David was a former member of the Rotary Club of Acton and the Toronto Masonic Lodge. He was involved with and sponsored stock car racing at Acton-Ospringe Speedway and played and sponsored Bush League Hockey in Acton. David also owned and operated Acton Autobody for several years.

Beloved husband of the late Hanna (Jacklynn) Cleland who predeceased him in 2012. Loving father of Barry, Lorraine Cleland-Renaud and Blaine (deceased 1979). Cherished grandpa of Che and Helen and children Damien, Megan and Kali; Devin and Kim and daughter Adele; Jeff and Anita and children Alicia, Sara, Marcus and Jason; David and Mia and children Jem and Persephone; and special grandpa of Jen and Will. Dear brother of Mac and Jean Cleland and brother-in-law of Reglindis Cleland, Phyllis Jacklynn and Ester Prince. Uncle Dave has a special place in the hearts of many nieces, nephews and cousins and their families and will be missed by all.

Schalk, CorSchalk, Cor – Cor passed away with his family by his side at Knollcrest Lodge, Milverton on Friday May 23, 2014. He was a long time resident of Atwood and was born 81 years ago in Abennes The Netherlands, son of the late Gerard Sr. and Marie (Schyff) Schalk. Cor and his family emmigrated to Canada in 1950, settling in Listowel. He owned and operated Schalk’s Garage, Atwood from 1955 to 1985, worked at Atwood Pet Foods and Harvey Krotz Ford, drove bus for Kipfer’s Garage Milverton and bulk truck for Murray Chapman. Dad was passionate about coaching the Atwood Huskies, cheering on the Habs and enjoyed time spent at the FrenchRiver.

Beloved husband of the late Joyce (Telfer) Schalk who predeceased him in 2009. Loving father of Debbie Schalk of Listowel, Joanne Schalk of Stratford, Jeff Schalk of Listowel and the special grandpa of Luke and Dylan. Dear brother of Willa Ament, Gerard and Edith Schalk all of Listowel. Fondly remembered by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Marie and Norman Bell, Bruce Telfer, Ken Wenzel and many nieces and nephews. Also remembered by the Telfer family.

Fisher, ErlmeFISHER, Erlme Anne – passed away quietly at ListowelMemorialHospital on Saturday April 19, 2014 at the age of 78. Erlme was a member of Atwood Presbyterian Church and the Women’s Missionary Society. She taught school in HowickTownship, CarrickTownship, Maryborough, City of Brampton and at the Midwestern Regional Centre for many years. Erlme’s stories and love of her very good friends will be missed.

Erlme was the daughter of the late Clifford and Isobel (Dixon) Stewart. She was predeceased by her brother Alex in infancy, her brother Beverley and nephew Sean.

At Erlme’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Atwood Presbyterian Church on Friday April 25, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Andrew Thompson officiating. Interment in CliffordCemetery.

Shinkle, MargaretMargaret (Polly) Ida Christina (Hulley) Shinkle – passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday April 3, 2014 in Mesa, Arizona.  Margaret was born July 2, 1935 in Silver Corners, Ontario.

Cherished mother of Gilbert Shinkle (Christine) and Rebecca Christensen (Michael).  Loving grandmother of David Whitton, Christopher Whitton (Erin), Sergeant James Patrick Christensen, Petty Officer Second Class Rickie Lee Shinkle, Corisa Christensen and Miranda Christensen.  Great grandmother of Joshua Whitton, Courtney Whitton, Noah Whitton, Jackson (Jax) Whitton and Kylie Whitton.  Great great grandmother of Oliver Burnham.  Loving sister of Gordon (Porky) Hulley (Elsie), Gladys Haldenby (Doug), Lawrence Hulley (Joan), Warren Hulley (Sharon) and sister-in-law of Nancy Hulley.  Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Margaret has left us to join her beloved husband Donald Shinkle, her eldest daughter Debra Whitton, her loving parents Jack and Margaret Hulley, her brothers Robert and Norman Hulley, her niece Donna Rutledge and her great nephew Kasey Pestell.
