Alvaro, Samuel Peter “Sam” of Caressant Care Home, St. Thomas, passed away Saturday, March 9th, 2013, peacefully, surrounded by his family at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, in his 95th year. Beloved husband of Marie (Walters) Alvaro and loved father of David and his wife Ann Alvaro of St. Thomas and Rick and his wife Lisa Alvaro of Union. Loved grandfather of Craig (fiancée Eiki), Lisa (Scott), Tony and Andrea (Lionel) and great grandfather of Michael, Charlie, Carter, Adam and Rui. Dear brother of Jimmy Alvaro (Piovena) of Toronto, Carm McNea of St. Thomas, Rose Braden (Phil) of Hamilton, Bill Alvaro (Mary) of St. Thomas, Pat DeCandido (Jack) of London. Predeceased by five sisters Pauline “Polly” Frank (2013), Mary Dophin (Jack), Grace Spruce (John), Marguerite Alvaro and Ann Barfett (Stanley) and also three brothers, Frank (Christine), Joseph and Dominic (Deana) Alvaro. Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Sam was born in St, Thomas on August 13th, 1918, the son of the late Vincent and Angeline Alvaro. He was retired from the New York Central Railway. He was a member of the U.T.U. and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Sam was 50 year member of Talbot Lodge #546 A.F. and A.M., the London Lodge of Perfection, London Chapter of the Rose Croix, Moore Sovereigh Consistory, Scottish Rite and a 32 degree Mason. He was a member of Hillbilly Clan #59, Mocha Temple Shrine and Provo Corps. Sam served in the Army during W.W.II.
The family will receive friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Wednesday from 2:30-4:30 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Holy Angels’ Cemetery. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. A Memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 6:45 p.m. Remembrances may be made to the charity of choice.
