Glenn Allen 004PoppyALLEN, Glenn George, B.A., CD, of St. Thomas and Windsor, passed away at his St Thomas home on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in his 91st year.  Dear husband of Beverly Allen (née Cook) with whom he shared 55 happy years.  Loved brother of Joan Johnson (Peter) of Michigan and her family and Donald Allen (Daphne) of Espanola and his family.  Special Uncle to John Wates (Theresa) of Luxembourg and St. Thomas and his family.  Glenn was born in Chatham, ON, October 22, 1922, the son of the late Alvin and Elsa Allen.  He was a long-time member of Central United Church, Windsor and an adherent of Grace United Church, St. Thomas.  A graduate of UWO and of the Ontario College of Education, Toronto, Glenn was a secondary school teacher for 35 years. He taught in Riverside, Pembroke, Cornwall, Ottawa and Windsor, where he was the Head of Modern Languages at the Hon. W.C. Kennedy Collegiate Institute for thirty years.  He was always interested in extra-curricular activities and during his career coached teams in swimming, tennis and basketball.  Glenn was a sponsor teacher of Le Cercle Français, Il Circolo Italiano, and he organized an annual Concours Oratoire Français.  During the Second World War, Glenn served in the North Atlantic as a Wireless Telegraphist with the RCNVR, being awarded the North Atlantic Star.  He believed strongly in duty to one’s country, and was a proud veteran.  In peacetime, Glenn served 25 years as an officer with the Cadet Services of Canada and the Cadet Instructors List, instructing at cadet corps in Pembroke, Cornwall, Ottawa and Windsor, where he finished his military career as Commanding Officer of 1670 Kennedy C.I. Cadet Corps.  Glenn loved the outdoors, being an avid swimmer, hiker and gardener who spent untold hours creating and loving his flower gardens and outdoor ponds.  He was happiest in retirement watching his gardens change through the seasons.  Heartfelt thanks from the family are extended to Rebecca and Debra and the entire team at “Nurse Next Door” for the superb care and support they provided to Glenn that allowed him to remain in his home.  Relatives and friends will be received by the family one hour prior to the funeral at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) where the funeral service will be held on Monday, July 29th at 11:00 a.m.  Interment in St. Thomas Cemetery, West Avenue.  Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Elgin-St. Thomas gratefully acknowledged.
