Chemainus – Enid Wilhelmina Ackles, aged 83 of Ladysmith BC, passed away peacefully at the Chemainus Healthcare Centre in Chemainus BC with family present at 2:45 PM on Tuesday June 7, 2016.
Enid is survived by her husband Douglas; son Donald and his partner Karin; son Brian and partner Catherine; grandson David and partner Kai; brother Hazen and wife Murial; brother Ken and wife Joan; and sister-in-law Diane and husband Mark.
Born and raised on a farm outside St. John NB, Enid lived most of her life in Ottawa, Montreal, and Montebello Quebec before retiring to Ladysmith in 2006
Enid grew up on a farm outside St John New Brunswick with 4 brothers, Hazen, Ken, Lloyd and Fraser and parents Olive and Harry. After finishing school, Enid started teaching at the local one-room school before training as a registered nurse at the St. John General Hospital. Enid spent her life in service to others as a teacher, a nurse, and a volunteer. A wonderful wife and mother, her journey through life touched more people than anyone will ever know. Married for 59 years to Douglas, and with a career as nurse for nearly 50 years, Enid always put others first. In her later years as a nurse she worked primarily in palliative care and with nursing homes, ensuring the best level of care was available to everyone. Family was important to Enid, with 19 nieces and nephews, family holidays at the farm were a time for celebration and being together. Enid always had time for others, volunteering with the church, or taking holiday shifts at the hospital so others could be with their younger families.
Never afraid of a challenge, Enid learned to swim as an adult, took up skiing (downhill, cross country and water), became an avid golfer, and traveled extensively in Canada, the US and Europe.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at the Chemainus Health Care Centre. Enid’s journey was peaceful to the end due in large part to their dedication, compassion and professionalism.
Her journey is now done, and as always she wasn’t in it to compete or win, but she still finished first. She will be missed and always in our hearts.
