BOWERMAN, Walter Vernon “Vern” of Lively, ON

Posted by on March 31, 2014

BOWERMAN, WalterVern was born in Bancroft, Ontario on April 16th, 1928 and passed suddenly on March 19th, 2014 at the age of 85 years, in Lively, Ontario.  He is predeceased by his sisters Merine Bowerman, Yvonne McDonald, his mother Lorna Bowerman and is survived by his wife June Mary Bowerman, his daughter Lois Vincent (Jacques); his sons Alan Bowerman (Myra), Dr. Brian Bowerman (Catherine); grandchildren Danielle Vincent (Justin Jim), Glyn Bowerman, Julie Vincent, Amy (nee Bowerman) Savile (Chad), David Vincent (Layna Lepine), Natalie Vincent, Gavin Bowerman, Ben Vincent, Alana Bowerman, Ethan Bowerman; great-grandchildren Ava and Luka; brother Lorne Bowerman (Constance) and sisters June Reid (Carl) and Vivian Rose (Doug).  He grew up on a small farm in Eastern Ontario and at a young age found himself to be “man of the house” during the depression.  He trained as a chemical engineer at the University of Toronto and University of Michigan before going on to work at Kodak, DuPont, Cryovac and then, in a “knight’s move” went to the Manitoba Government – initially working with research and development with new patents and finally in alternate energies research and development for the Province until his retirement in 1988.  On retiring he travelled extensively and was a snow bird in Florida for several years and once in Spain.  Everywhere Vern went he was immediately popular because he would always pitch in.  He enjoyed fishing and smoking trout for his trailer park in Newcastle. He and June would run line dancing, “horse racing”, bridge and various other events for their friends and community.  You could never take the country from Vern – he loved his garden and his fishing pole.  In Florida was a “destination” for his grandchildren as they were growing up.  He finally settled in Lively when traveling became more difficult to be close to family and near his roots.  He and June remained the terror of the slot machines with their travels to Michigan and Rama.  He was happily married for just short of 60 years.  The world has lost a great engineer – we will have to find someone else to quietly make sure everything is still running properly!  There will be no visitation.  Interment to follow in Belleville, Ontario this summer.  Funeral arrangements entrusted to the COOPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, Sudbury.

SABOURIN, Gilles Roger of Sudbury, ON

Posted by on March 31, 2014

SABOURIN, GillesIn loving memory of Gilles Roger Sabourin, Monday, March 17, 2014 at Health Sciences North surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Elise (Boulard). Loving father of Diane Wilkins (Geof) and Roger (Cindy McKay).  Dear son of Richard and Marie-Ange (Paquin) both predeceased. Dear brother of Rachelle Sabourin of Windsor and predeceased by brothers Laurent and Denis (Bella). Born in Sudbury, he married Elise in 1963 in a modest celebration and began what ended up to be over 50 years of loving bliss. He began his career at INCO at age 18 as a miner, retiring as a hoistman after 34 years. He was a humble man, known for his work ethics, his family never lacked anything and he worked every overtime shift offered to him. He was quiet and unassuming yet was a magnet for children who loved to climb all over him, follow him and call him by whatever loving nickname they came up with which always put a smile on his face. He loved his role as Godfather to 5 special children and took it seriously. He was an avid hunter then switched to being an amazing cook. You never knew what surprises would be displayed in your plate as he tried a new recipe and all were delicious! He was known for his “golf course” lawn and his love of gardening. He was often seen mowing the lawn and snowblowing the driveway of neighbours never expecting or accepting anything in return. He was the most loving role model for his children and he lovingly accepted Geof and Cindy as his own. Our hearts are broken but Heaven gained an angel. The family will receive relatives and friends at the COOPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, 222 Lasalle Blvd, Sudbury, on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9.  A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home Chapel, Sudbury.  Donations (by cheque only) to the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
