Collavino, Valentino “Rigo”

Peacefully while in the loving care of his family on July 4, 2012 at 85 years of age. Beloved husband of Anna, who was his devoted wife of 60 years.  Loving son of the late Nicolo (1985) & Amelia (1994) Collavino.  Cherished father of Sonia Walton, Loris & Kim Collavino, and Roy Collavino.  Adored Nonno to Katie & Mitch Williams, Erica & David Furnas, Eric & Susan Walton, and Michael, Lauren & Kristina Collavino.  Bisnonno to many great-grandchildren.  Dear brother of Dolinda (Giacomo) DeMonte and Mario (Maria) Collavino and brother-in-law of Sebastiano (Bertilla) Bianchin, and Eduardo (Elide) Bianchin.  Loving uncle to many nephews and nieces here and overseas.  Rigo will be sadly missed by his favourite dogs, Smokey & Brunetta.

Rigo was born in Muris, Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1950.  He worked in construction and as a lumberjack until co-founding Collavino Brothers Construction with his brother Mario in 1954.  In 1975 Rigo and his brother founded Prestressed Systems Inc., a pre-cast concrete company, where he was active and influential up until his death.  He was one of the founding members of the Fogular Furlan Club and long standing member of the Caboto Club and Verdi Club.  Rigo was passionate and very active in the Alpini Association both in Canada and in Italy.  He was recognized with numerous awards with respect to his work and contributions within Canada and Italy.  Proud to have immigrated to Canada from Italy, he never forgot his humble roots.  Rigo and his brother commissioned a statue of a young immigrant man which was then dedicated during his last trip to his beloved homeland, and now sits proudly atop of Mont di Muris for all to enjoy.

He was considered by all to be a man of simple needs and few words, who had an incredibly strong, tireless work ethic.  Evidence of his work can be seen in many areas of the world including Egypt, Kenya, Cameroon, Sri Lanka, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Disney World, and New York.  Of all his projects, he was most passionate and dedicated to his own homestead in Amherstburg, erecting bridges and planting numerous trees.

Rigo will be remembered as starting each day with his beloved Annute (Anna), sharing an espresso corretto and finishing the day with a glass of homemade Italian wine.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
